Chain peroxy radicals

Antioxidants markedly retard the rate of autoxidation throughout the useful life of the polymer. Chain-terminating antioxidants have a reactive —NH or —OH functional group and include compounds such as secondary aryl amines or hindered phenols. They function by transfer of hydrogen to free radicals, principally to peroxy radicals. Butylated hydroxytoluene is a widely used example. [Pg.1008]

Oxidation begins with the breakdown of hydroperoxides and the formation of free radicals. These reactive peroxy radicals initiate a chain reaction that propagates the breakdown of hydroperoxides into aldehydes (qv), ketones (qv), alcohols, and hydrocarbons (qv). These breakdown products make an oxidized product organoleptically unacceptable. Antioxidants work by donating a hydrogen atom to the reactive peroxide radical, ending the chain reaction (17). [Pg.436]

Carbon-centered radicals generally react very rapidly with oxygen to generate peroxy radicals (eq. 2). The peroxy radicals can abstract hydrogen from a hydrocarbon molecule to yield a hydroperoxide and a new radical (eq. 3). This new radical can participate in reaction 2 and continue the chain. Autooxidation. Liquid-phase oxidation of hydrocarbons, alcohols, and aldehydes by oxygen produces chemiluminescence in quantum yields of 10 to 10 ° ein/mol (128—130). Although the efficiency is low, the chemiluminescent reaction is important because it provides an easy tool for study of the kinetics and properties of autooxidation reactions including industrially important processes (128,131). The light is derived from combination of peroxyl radicals (132), which are primarily responsible for the propagation and termination of the autooxidation chain reaction. Oxidation. AH polyamides are susceptible to oxidation. This involves the initial formation of a free radical on the carbon alpha to the NH group, which reacts to form a peroxy radical with subsequent chain reactions leading to chain scission and yellowing. As soon as molten nylon is exposed to air it starts to discolor and continues to oxidize until it is cooled to below 60°C. It is important, therefore, to minimize the exposure of hot nylon to air to avoid discoloration or loss of molecular weight. Similarly, nylon parts exposed to high temperature in air lose their properties with time as a result of oxidation. As the quinone stabilizer is consumed, the peroxy radicals initiate the addition chain propagation reactions through the formation of styryl radicals. In dilute solutions, the reaction between styrene and fumarate ester foUows an alternating sequence. However, in concentrated resin solutions, the alternating addition reaction is impeded at the onset of the physical gel. The Hquid resin forms an intractable gel when only 2% of the fumarate unsaturation is cross-linked with styrene. Eor antioxidant activity, the reaction of aminyl radicals with peroxy radicals is very beneficial. The nitroxyl radicals formed in this reaction are extremely effective oxidation inhibitors. Nitroxides function by trapping chain-propagating alkyl radicals to give hydroxylamine ethers. These ethers, in turn, quench chain propagating peroxy radicals and in the process regenerate the original nitroxides. The cycHc nature of this process accounts for the superlative antioxidant activity of nitroxides (see Antioxidants). Thus, antioxidant activity improves with an increase in stabiUty of the aminyl and nitroxyl radicals. Consequendy, commercial DPA antioxidants are alkylated in the ortho and para positions to prevent undesirable coupling reactions. [Pg.243]

The fimction of an antioxidant is to divert the peroxy radicals and thus prevent a chain process. Other antioxidants fimction by reacting with potential initiators and thus retard oxidative degradation by preventing the initiation of autoxidation chains. A PP sample after ozonization in the presence of UV-irradiation becomes brittle after 8 hrs of exposure, whereas the same effect in ozone is noticeable after 50-60 hours.Degradation of polymer chain occurs as a result of decomposition of peroxy radicals. The oxidation rapidly reaches saturation, suggesting the surface nature of ozone and atomic oxygen against of PP as a consequence of limited diffusion of both oxygen species into the polymer. Ozone reacts with PP mainly on the surface since the reaction rate and the concentration of intermediate peroxy radicals are proportional to the surface area and not the weight of the polymer. It has been found that polyethylene is attacked only to a depth of 5-7 microns (45). [Pg.197]

We can also produce direct crosslinks by the action of peroxy radicals, as shown in Fig, 18.8. In this process, we blend an organic peroxide, such as dicumyl peroxide, into molten polyethylene at a temperature below that at which the peroxide decomposes. Once we have formed the molten blend into the required shape, we increase its temperature until the peroxide decomposes into peroxy radicals, as shown in Fig, 18.8 a). The peroxy radicals abstract hydrogen atoms from the polyethylene chains to create free radicals, as shown in Fig. 18.8 b). Simulation programs for the ESR line shapes of peroxy radicals for specific models of dynamics have been developed for the study of oxidative degradation of polymers due to ionizing radiation [66]. A rate of production analysis shows that radical production occurs primarily via 0(xD)+H20, but with a significant contribution to HO2 from HCHO photolysis. OH reacts mainly with CO and CH4, followed by HCHO, H2, O3 and CH3OOH with minor contributions from NMHCs. Results of a chemical activation induced by ultrasound have been reported by Nakamura et al. in the initiation of radical chain reactions with tin radicals [59]. When an aerated solution of R3SnH and an olefin is sonicated at low temperatures (0 to 10 °C), hydroxystannation of the double bond occurs and not the conventional hydrostannation achieved under silent conditions (Scheme 3.10). This point evidences the differences between radical sonochemistry and the classical free radical chemistry. The result was interpreted on the basis of the generation of tin and peroxy radicals in the region of hot cavities, which then undergo synthetic reactions in the bulk liquid phase. These findings also enable the sonochemical synthesis of alkyl hydroperoxides by aerobic reductive oxygenation of alkyl halides [60], and the aerobic catalytic conversion of alkyl halides into alcohols by trialkyltin halides [61]. [Pg.91]

This equation seems to be a key reaction point in the antioxidant action of these amines—>N radicals in the presence of oxygen are transformed via peroxy radical intermediates into nitroxyl radicals. The nitroxyl radicals are very persistent and react efficiently with radicals produced on polyolefine degradation. Such radical interception blocks the chain in radical oxidation and therefore causes the antioxidant activity of sterically hindered amines (Brede et al. 1998). [Pg.243]

Vanoppen et al. [88] have reported the gas-phase oxidation of zeolite-ad-sorbed cyclohexane to form cyclohexanone. The reaction rate was observed to increase in the order NaY < BaY < SrY < CaY. This was attributed to a Frei-type thermal oxidation process. The possibility that a free-radical chain process initiated by the intrazeolite formation of a peroxy radical, however, could not be completely excluded. On the other hand, liquid-phase auto-oxidation of cyclohexane, although still exhibiting the same rate effect (i.e., NaY < BaY < SrY < CaY), has been attributed to a homolytic peroxide decomposition mechanism [89]. Evidence for the homolytic peroxide decomposition mechanism was provided in part by the observation that the addition of cyclohexyl hydroperoxide dramatically enhanced the intrazeolite oxidation.
