One of the leaders of the Love Canal protest was a housewife named Lois Gibbs, who subsequently moved to northern Virginia to establish the Citizens Clearinghouse for Hazardous Waste (since renamed the Center for Health, Environment and Justice), to advise other communities afflicted by toxic wastes. Over the next decade, the dimensions of the chemical waste problem began to emerge and thousands of local groups formed to advocate for the cleanup of contaminated local lands. This toxics movement eventually encompassed many thousands of local groups in all 50 states. [Pg.998]

As part of the Third National Health and Nutrition Evaluation Survey (NHANES III), the Environment Health Laboratory Sciences Division of the National Center for Environment Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will be analyzing human urine samples for chloroform (Needham et al. 1990). These data will give an indication of the frequency of occurrence and background levels of these compounds in the general population. [Pg.220]

In HBM, the most commonly studied PFC are the perfluormated sulfonates and the perfluorinated carboxylates. Among these perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) are of greatest concern. Both persist in humans and the environment. Besides PFOS and PFOA, perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) is also frequently detected in human samples. Among the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 12 PFC are measured regularly in human serum [2]. Haug et al. [3] included 19 PFC in their study with serum samples from Norway residents (Table 1). [Pg.157]

The Centers for Disease Control and prevention has published a document on the topic of biomonitoring for uranium exposure (CDC 2013). The document includes a brief introduction on the properties of uranium, its presence in the environment, and sources of possible exposure. This is followed by information on biomonitoring, mainly the results of measurement of the uranium level in urine samples of unexposed populations and some of the special cases that were discussed in this chapter. The document concludes with the following statement Biomonitoring studies on levels of uranium provide physicians and public health officials with reference values so that they can determine whether people have been exposed to higher levels of uranium than are found in the general population. Biomonitoring data can also help scientists plan and conduct research on exposure and health effects (CDC 2013). [Pg.226]
