Pulping process, cellulose fibers

Neste patented an industrial route to a cellulose carbamate pulp (90) which was stable enough to be shipped into rayon plants for dissolution as if it were xanthate. The carbamate solution could be spun into sulfuric acid or sodium carbonate solutions, to give fibers which when completely regenerated had similar properties to viscose rayon. When incompletely regenerated they were sufficientiy self-bonding for use in papermaking. The process was said to be cheaper than the viscose route and to have a lower environmental impact (91). It has not been commercialized, so no confirmation of its potential is yet available. [Pg.352]

The most commonly used reinforcement for high pressure decorative and industrial laminates is paper (qv). The strong substrate layers, or filler, are kraft paper. Kraft is a brown paper made from a sulfate pulp process (8). It consists of both short cellulose fibers from hardwoods and long fibers from conifers. The long fibers impart most of the wet strength required for resin saturation processes. [Pg.532]

Flotation. Flotation (qv) is used alone or in combination with washing and cleaning to deink office paper and mixtures of old newsprint and old magazines (26). An effective flotation process must fulfill four functions. (/) The process must efficiently entrain air. Air bubble diameter is about 1000 p.m. Typically air bubbles occupy 25—60% of the flotation cell volume. Increa sing the airRquid ratio in the flotation cell is said to improve ink removal efficiency (27). (2) Ink must attach to air bubbles. This is primarily a function of surfactant chemistry. Air bubbles must have sufficient residence time in the cell for ink attachment to occur. (3) There must be minimal trapping of cellulose fibers in the froth layer. This depends on both cell design and surfactant chemistry. (4) The froth layer must be separated from the pulp slurry before too many air bubbles coUapse and return ink particles to the pulp slurry. [Pg.8]

Various solvents are being investigated to dissolve lignocellulosic materials. Some approaches focus on the selective depolymerization and extraction of lignin and hemicellulose as pre-treatment to produce clean cellulose fibers for subsequent fermentation or for pulping. Other approaches attempt to dissolve the whole lignocellulose with or without depolymerization. The liquefaction processes that are carried out at high temperature (>300 °C), and produce a complex oil mixture, are discussed above with the pyrolysis processes. [Pg.40]

Other abundant carbohydrates, such as hemicelluloses and pectin, are usually highly branched and thus not very suitable for fiber and film production. Hemicelluloses and some pectins are also acetylated in the native state, which makes them more resistant to enzymatic hydrolysis (20,21) and changes their solubility properties (9-77,75). Branching does not, however, preclude their utilization in such potentially large markets as thickeners and adhesives. Xylans, for example, show such a strong adhesion to cellulose fibers that they are very difficult to remove completely by both acidic and alkaline pulping processes (22). [Pg.6]

Pulps can be defined as fibrous products derived from cellulosic fiber-contaiumg materials and used in the production of hardboard, fiberboard, paperboard, paper, and molded-pulp products. The natural fibers obtained from cotton, wood, flax, hemp, and jute all are cellulose fibers and serve as raw materials for the textile and paper industries.
