Cell evolution

All metals, regardless of whether they are essential or nonessential, can exhibit toxic effects at high concentrations.14-16 Excess concentrations of essential metals can lead to nonspecific binding, which can affect the enzyme structure and function. Because controlling metal concentrations is vital for maintaining homeostatic conditions within bacterial cells, evolution has bestowed upon organisms a number of ways to regulate concentrations of essential metals and to resist the toxicity of nonessential metals.17-20...

This chapter has presented a brief history of fuel cell evolution, the electrochemical fundamentals of PEM fuel cells, PEM fuel cell concepts and terminology, as well as performance analysis. Its main purpose has been to provide readers with some introductory and background information for a fundamental understanding of fuel cell AC impedance, to facilitate their journey through the next several chapters. 

Advances in molecular biology have led to significant discoveries about such changes in cell function and behavior as the development of higher organisms, the immunologic response, cancer and cell evolution. It has contributed tremendously to applications in the field of medicine, forensic science, biotechnology and biomedical industries. 

Most of the intermediary metabolism in cells occurs within the aqueous compartments. However, cells are not dilute bags of juice. They have evolved the capacity to exert exquisite organizational and structural control of their internal environments. It is probable that the design of present-day cells is retained from early cells evolution of relationships among metabolism, cell architecture, and water.
