Nitrogen is unusual in forming so many oxides. The acidity of the Group V oxides falls from phosphorus, whose oxides are acidic, through arsenic and antimony whose oxides are amphoteric, to the basic oxide ofbismuth. This change is in accordance with the change from the non-metallic element, phosphorus, to the essentially metallic element, bismuth. The +5 oxides are found, in each case, to be more acidic than the corresponding + 3 oxides. [Pg.228]

Zinc and cadmium have an oxidation number of +2 in all their compounds. Zinc is an essential element for human health. It is present in many enzymes and plays a role in the expression of DNA and in growth. Zinc is toxic only in very-high amounts. Sulfur vapor consists of a mixture of species that includes S8, S6, S4, and S2 (which like 02 is paramagnetic). Because the S8 molecule is nonpolar, it is soluble in liquids such as CS2 and C6H6. Selenium also consists of cyclic molecules that contain eight atoms, and tellurium is essentially metallic in character. In their vapors, several species are found that contain 2, 6, or 8 atoms. Both are useful as semiconductors, and selenium has been used in rectifiers. Because the electrical conductivity of selenium increases as the intensity of illumination increases, it has been used to operate electrical switches that open or close as a light beam is broken. For example, the industrial preparation of mineral acids, such as sulfuric, hydrochloric and nitric, inevitably leads to them containing small concentrations of metals as impurities. If the acid is to be used purely as an acid in a simple reaction, the presence of small amounts of metals is probably unimportant. If, however, the acid is to be used to digest a sample for the determination of trace metals by atomic absorption spectrometry, then clearly the presence of metallic impurities in the acid may have a significant effect on the results.
