Some authors argue that the basic approach underlying emission reduction credit systems like the Kyoto Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) can be extended to create linkage opportunities in diverse emission control systems in ways that do not necessarily suffer from the shortfalls of the current CDM. Moreover, while emission reduction credit systems are designed to work with MB systems like tradable permits, they describe ways in which it can interact with tax systems as well as certain regulatory systems [22]. 

The /1CDM paradigm for structure formation in the Universe, described in many hundreds of published papers, is very effective at reproducing observed large scale structure, based on a boundary condition of a scale-free Gaussian random power spectrum. Yet ACDM contains no information on the physics of whatever makes up CDM, and remains deficient in its description of galaxies and small-scale structures thus it is on galaxy scales and smaller where we can still learn the most, and hopefully attach some (astro-)physics to an ab initio power spectrum. 

How will we identify the extra astrophysics required to reconcile the properties of CDM dark haloes with those of luminous galaxies We can start by developing knowledge of the evolutionary history of at least one place in at least one galaxy. We would be unlucky if that place were far from the norm alternatively, any theory that predicts such a history to be very unusual might be suspect -the galaxian Copernican principle. Kinematics and current spatial location are of course critical parameters, so that traditional stellar populations analyses are...

The calcium mediated contraction of smooth muscle, which unlike striated muscle does not contain troponin, is quite different and requires a particular calcium-binding protein called calmodulin. Calmodulin (CM) is a widely distributed regulatory protein able to bind, with high affinity, four Ca2+ per protein molecule. The calcium—calmodulin (CaCM) complex associates with, and activates, regulatory proteins, usually enzymes, in many different cell types in smooth muscle the target regulatory proteins are caldesmon (CDM) and the enzyme myosin light chain kinase (MLCK). As described below, CaCM impacts on both actin and myosin filaments. 

In addition to the displacement of caldesmon, smooth muscle cell contraction requires kinase-induced phosphorylation of myosin. Smooth muscle has a unique type of myosin filament called p-light chains which are the target (substrate) for MLCK, but MLCK is only active when complexed with CaCM. Myosin light chain phosphatase reverses the PKA-mediated process and when cytosolic calcium ion concentration falls, CDM is released from CaCM and re-associates with the actin. The central role of calcium-calmodulin in smooth muscle contraction is shown in Figure 7.4.
