Cartilage formation

Recently, water-soluble protein fractions, isolated from extracts of bone matrix, were incorporated into a collagen matrix and shown to induce bone (67,68) and cartilage formation both in vitro and in vivo (69,70). In the latter studies, in the absence of the collajgen delivery system, the proteins were incapable of inducing cartilage formation in vivo when implanted intramuscularly into mice. The success of this approach appears to depend on delivering the active agents at an effective dose over an extended time period. [Pg.239]

The size of the cartilage formed in the experimental bioabsorbable implants increased over a period of about 7 weeks after which time it remained stable. The growth appeared histologically to be at the expense of the fibrous tissue initially seen and associated at least temporally with a decrease in neovascularization and resolution of the mild inflammatory response originally noted. There was a decrease in inflammatory response, as evidenced by decreases in the number of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and giant cells, which correlated with the disappearance of the polymers. Very little evidence of either inflammatory response or polymer remnants were seen after 7 weeks when using bioabsorbable material, while moderate inflammation and minimal cartilage formation was noted in the nonabsorbable implants after this period of time. [Pg.22]

Skeletal growth in acromegaly cannot simply be explained by an anti-insulinic effect, stimulation of lipolysis, or stimulation of protein synthesis because cartilage formation requires that collagen (conversion of protein to hydroxyproline) and cartilage (synthesis of chondroitin sulfate) be formed. Acromegalic serum... [Pg.430]
