Lanthanum combines with nitrogen, carbon, sulfur and phosphorus at elevated temperatures, forming binary salts. Also, with metalloid elements such as boron, silicon, selenium, and arsenic, similar reactions occur at high temperatures forming similar binary compounds. [Pg.446]

A second type of ternary electrolyte systems is solvent -supercritical molecular solute - salt systems. The concentration of supercritical molecular solutes in these systems is generally very low. Therefore, the salting out effects are essentially effects of the presence of salts on the unsymmetric activity coefficient of molecular solutes at infinite dilution. The interaction parameters for NaCl-C02 binary pair and KCI-CO2 binary pair are shown in Table 8. Water-electrolyte binary parameters were obtained from Table 1. The basicity of the molten carbonate is defined as equal to -log (activity of O ) or -log aM20, where a is the activity of the alkali metal oxide M2O. Lu and coworkers have synthesized a related bifunctional cobalt(lll) salen catalyst similar to that seen in Fig. 11 that contains an attached quaternary ammonium salt (Fig. 13) [36]. This catalyst was found to be very effective at copolymerizing propylene oxide and CO2. For example, in a reaction carried out at 90°C and 2.5 MPa pressure, a high molecular weight poly(propylene carbonate) = 59,000 and PDI = 1.22) was obtained with only 6% propylene carbonate byproduct. For a polymerization process performed under these reaction conditions for 0.5 h, a TOF (turnover frequency) of 5,160 h was reported. For comparative purposes, the best TOF observed for a binary catalyst system of (salen)CoX (where X is 2,4-dinitrophenolate) onium salt or base for the copolymerization of propylene oxide and CO2 at 25°C was 400-500 h for a process performed at 1.5 MPa pressure [21, 37]. On the other hand, employing catalysts of the type shown in Fig. 12, TOFs as high as 13,000 h with >99% selectivity for copolymers withMn 170,000 were obtained at 75°C and 2.0 MPa pressure [35]. The cobalt catalyst in Fig. 13 has also been shown to be effective for selective copolymer formation from styrene oxide and carbon dioxide [38]. [Pg.14]

Binary Selenides. Most binary selenides are formed by heating selenium in the presence of the element, reduction of selenites or selenates with carbon or hydrogen, and double decomposition of heavy-metal salts in aqueous solution or suspension with a soluble selenide salt, eg, Na2Se or (NH Se [66455-76-3]. Atmospheric oxygen oxidizes the selenides more rapidly than the corresponding sulfides and more slowly than the tellurides. Selenides of the alkali, alkaline-earth metals, and lanthanum elements are water soluble and readily hydrolyzed. Heavy-metal selenides are insoluble in water. Polyselenides form when selenium reacts with alkali metals dissolved in liquid ammonia. Metal (M) hydrogen selenides of the M HSe type are known. Some heavy-metal selenides show important and useful electric, photoelectric, photo-optical, and semiconductor properties. The solubilities of carbon dioxide in aqueous solutions of mixed salts chosen from eight electrolytes (NaCl, KCl, Na2SO>, NH Cl, AfgSOj, (HHh)2SOh, CaCl2, KNOs) were measured at 25° C and 1 atm by the saturation method. Experimental results for the mixed-salt system were not described easily by the modified Setschenow Equation. However, they were correlated very well by an empirical two-parameter equation. Colloidal Pt/RuO c- (C5 0.4nm) stabilized by a surfactant was prepared by co-hydrolysis of PtCU and RuCls under basic conditions.
