Mitochondria Mitochondria are organelles surrounded by two membranes that differ markedly in their protein and lipid composition. Many times the solutions used in the management of body fluids are given to correct a fluid volume deficit and to supply carbohydrates (nutrition). The nurse reviews the patient s chart for a full understanding of the rationale for administration of the specific solution. 

When appropriate, nursing measures that may be instituted to correct a fluid volume and carbohydrate deficit may be included in a plan of care. Examples of these measures include offering oral fluids at frequent intervals and encouraging the patient to take small amounts of nourishment between meals and to eat as much as possible at mealtime... 

We will focus on the development of ruthenium-based metathesis precatalysts with enhanced activity and applications to the metathesis of alkenes with nonstandard electronic properties. In the class of molybdenum complexes [7a,g,h] recent research was mainly directed to the development of homochi-ral precatalysts for enantioselective olefin metathesis. This aspect has recently been covered by Schrock and Hoveyda in a short review and will not be discussed here [8h]. In addition, several important special topics have recently been addressed by excellent reviews, e.g., the synthesis of medium-sized rings by RCM [8a], applications of olefin metathesis to carbohydrate chemistry [8b], cross metathesis [8c,d],enyne metathesis [8e,f], ring-rearrangement metathesis [8g], enantioselective metathesis [8h], and applications of metathesis in polymer chemistry (ADMET,ROMP) [8i,j]. Chemists tend to be prolific authors. Some say they have a conceit of authorship, whereas others contend it is pride. Stacey was certainly proud of his many scientific papers (more than 350) and several books. In addition, he was founder-editor of three journals and he was a member of the editorial boards of several others. He was a supporter of Advances in Carbohydrate Chemistry from its inception. He served on the advisory board for many years, was associate editor, and contributed to early volumes. 

In his preface to Volume 8 of Advances, published in 1953, M. L. Wolfrom, the founding editor, noted that Carbohydrate nomenclature has been an everpresent problem in this series. . and drew attention to the agreement between American and British carbohydrate chemists that resulted in the published British-American Rules of Carbohydrate Nomenclature. A revision of that document was published in 1962, to be followed seven years later by an internationally proposed set of guidelines for naming carbohydrates and their derivatives.

The prominent role played by Japanese investigators in carbohydrate science is underscored by the two substantial chapters by Japanese authors in the current volume. This volume also pays tribute to one of the greatest Japanese carbohydrate scientists, Hamao Umezawa, in the obituary article contributed by Tsuchiya, Maeda, and Horton. Hamao Umezawa dedicated his entire, extraordinarily productive career to the development of antibiotics his innovative contributions are exemplified by his chapter in Volume 30 of this series on the biochemical mechanism of inactivation of aminoglycoside antibiotics.
