Specific volume partial

In macromolecular chemistry, two partial molar quantities are especially important partial molar volume (particularly partial specific volume) and partial molar free energy, also called chemical potential. The partial specific volume v,- is defined as [Pg.82]

Partial molar volume V, = i V/dni)j- and partial specific volume v, are closely related one is expressed in moles and the other is expressed in grams. [Pg.82]

An exact description of partial specific volume in terms of molecular structure is not known. The parameter v, alone does not seem to be clear enough to characterize the behavior of the component i in the solution in relation to its size, shape, and chemical reactivity. However, it is an indispensable quantity which permits interpretation of other experimental parameters, such as light scattering, difiusion, and sedimentation, as we will see later. [Pg.82]

The experimental methods for measuring partial specific volume include density gradient columns, pyconometry, the magnetic flotation methods, and the vibration method. Regardless of which method we use, the measurement is often tedious and difficult. In protein chemistry, instead of measurement, a reasonable estimation of v [Pg.82]


The subscripts 1,2,3 refer to the main solvent, the polymer, and the solvent added, respectively.
