Hydroxylation or oxidative cleavage of the allylic methyl group present on the carbocyclic nonaromatic ring increases affinity for both CB receptors, as exemplified by the structure of nabilone (27), which has been introduced into the market as antiemetic agent for cancer supporting care and has also recently been approved in USA for the treatment of neuropathic pain [53]. The position of the double bond seems to be not crucial, indeed A -THC is almost equipotent with A -THC however, aromatization of this ring, as occurs in CBN, causes a marked decrease in affinity. [Pg.3427]

It is clear that patients with febrile neutropenia represent a heterogeneous group. Some patients are at lower risk and potentially could be treated as outpatients, thereby avoiding the risk and cost of hospitalization. The Multinational Association for Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) has validated a risk-assessment tool that assigns a risk score to patients presenting with febrile neutropenia7 (Table 96-3). Patients with a risk-index score of 21 or greater are identified as low risk and are candidates for outpatient therapy (discussed under Treatment ). [Pg.1469]

The major initial treatment modality for advanced prostate cancer is androgen ablation (e.g., orchiectomy or luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone [LHRH] agonists with or without antiandrogens). After disease progression, secondary hormonal manipulations, cytotoxic chemotherapy, and supportive care are used. [Pg.727]

Surgery can cure lung cancer, but only one in five patients are suitable for this treatment. If the tumor has not spread outside the chest and does not involve vital structures such as the liver, then surgical removal may be possible, but only if the patient does not also have severe bronchitis, heart disease, or other illnesses. Small cell lung cancer is treated with chemotherapy. Non-small cell cancer may be treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy (as part of a research trial) or with supportive care. Radiotherapy is either radical or palliative. ... [Pg.497]
