Cell lines established from human liver cancer cells can be derived from primary hepatocellular carcinoma or hepatoblastoma cells [10]. For example, the well known HepG2 fine was derived from hepatoblastoma cells. Such cells can be employed effectively if the function of normal liver cells has been highly preserved. In practice, however, such cells contain a high proportion of abnormal genetic component, which inhibits their ability to express normal protein synthesis and enzyme activity. Potential problems, such as the loss of liver specific functions and the possibifity of metastasis, which could arise from the use of hepatoma cells have not yet been satisfactorily discussed [13]. [Pg.102]

Rod-like, semiflexible, and ring-shaped polymers were claimed to be promising candidates as drug delivery vehicles, showing prolonged in vivo circulation times [70-73] and excellent accumulation in tumor cells [72, 74]. Reports on complexes of stiff polycations with DNA are rare. Besides other reports [75, 76], puUulan modified with spermine groups was reported to transfect T24 cells of a human bladder cancer cell line [77], HepG2 cells of a human hepatoma cell line [78, 79], and human microvascular endothelial cells [80]. [Pg.226]

Lee et al. (11) reported that mice fed a diet supplanented with 0.5% CLA exhibited significantly reduced hepatic SCD activity and SCDl mRNA expression. The data supported the conclusion that the active isomer inducing this effect was /10,cl2 CLA. Subsequently it was confirmed that fl0,cl2 CLA repressed the expression of SCDl in cultured 3T3-L1 mouse adipocytes (12). In the HepG2 human liver cancer cell line, /10,cl2 CLA inhibited SCD activity but not gene expression, whereas c9,/ll CLA was without effect (13). Interestingly, in certain human breast cancer cell lines, both tl0,cl2 and c9,fll CLA isomers significantly reduced SCD activity and protein level (13). [Pg.260]
