H. pylori P466 was also shown to have the ability to elaborate the cancer-associated sialyl Le antigen in its LPS. The sialyl Le was expressed simultaneously with Le and, in lesser amounts, the Le antigen. These Lewis blood-group termini were connected to the a core OS similar to that of the type strain.

In normal cells, core 1 is further processed by the addition of sialic acid and blood group determinants, or by extension or branching reactions (Figure 2). The T antigen is often abnormally expressed on cancer cells and on intestinal cells from patients with inflammatory bowel disease, and binds Peanut lectin, which has been shown to stimulate cell proliferation.
