Alterations in other gastric secretions, such as pepsinogens and blood group substances also take place in chronic atrophic gastritis. The secretion of pepsinogen I has been used as an indicator of intestinal metaplasia and gastric cancer (21, 22).

Case D (Fig. 39). This patient (blood group 0, secretor) with cancer of the lung metastatic to lymph nodes and other organs showed an atypical alkaline phosphatase picture. The rise in alkaline phosphatase resulted from an increase in a very heat-stable LPSAP fraction that accounted for 50% of the total. The non-LPSAP percent heat inactivation is also lower than expected (76.5%). The interpretation is that a new tissue source of serum alkaline phosphatase with altogether unusual... 

H. pylori P466 was also shown to have the ability to elaborate the cancer-associated sialyl Le antigen in its LPS. The sialyl Le was expressed simultaneously with Le and, in lesser amounts, the Le antigen. These Lewis blood-group termini were connected to the a core OS similar to that of the type strain.
