Some of the effects of toxic chemical mixtures on soil pollution are predictable. Acidic soils dissolve otherwise insoluble metal oxides and salts, thereby increasing available metal concentrations and toxicity to flora and fauna. Available copper content is inversely proportional to increased pH of soiU4 Earthworm mortality in soil polluted by lead increases as pH decreases. I15l The addition of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and its disodium salt to soil contaminated with cadmium, lead, and zinc increases the availability of these metals to plants and results in significant increases in the uptake of these in plants. I25l... [Pg.124]

Cadmium. Selenium can antagonize the nephrotoxic and hepatotoxic effects of cadmium in rats (Flora et al. 1982 Lindh et al. 1996 Nehru and Bansal 1996 Stajn et al. 1997), the inflammation, atrophy, and necrosis induced by cadmium in testes of rats (Jones et al. 1997 Mason and Young 1967 Ohta and Imamiya 1986 Wlodarczyk et al. 1995 Yiin et al. 1999), and the cardiotoxicity of cadmium in rats (Jamall et al. 1989). The protective effects are thought to occur as a result of the formation of a selenium-cadmium complex of high molecular weight (Chen et al. 1975 Jamall et al. 1989 Jamba et al. 1997 Ohta and Imamiya 1986). [Pg.196]

Cadmium, unlike synthetic compounds, is a naturally occurring element, and its presence has been detected in more than 1000 species of aquatic and terrestrial flora and fauna. At least six trends are evident from these data. First, marine biota generally contain significantly higher cadmium... [Pg.79]

Flora et al, (1982) used other biochemical parameters to study the interaction of selenium and cadmium. The administration of cadmium to rats enhanced the urinary excretion of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), and total proteins but decreased the renal activity of GOT and alkaline phosphatase, and renal levels of cadmium, copper, and zinc. Serum GOT and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) activities and hepatic levels of cadmium and zinc were increased, but the hepatic activities of GOT and GPT were decreased in cadmium-exposed rats. The concomitant administration of selenium reduced most of these cadmium-induced alterations. [Pg.225]
