Late in the 1960s, thanks to the efforts of Professor N. G. Basov, friendly contacts were established between scientists working in the USSR and the GDR in the field of quantum electronics. 1 frequently had to visit the Central Institute of Optics and Spectroscopy in Adlershof (Berlin) and Jena University, where central part in this field was played by Professors B. Wilhelmi and M. Schubert (Fig. 14.6).

Ludwig Wolff (1857-19191 was born in N6ustQdt/H8rdt, Germs ny, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Strasbourg working with Rudolf Fittig. He was professor of chemistry at the University of Jena.

Dr Georg Geisler is a product safety expert and modeller working with RCC Ltd, a Contract Research Organisation based in Basel, Switzerland. In this function, he conducts environmental risk assessments of pesticides, biocides and other chemicals, as well as safety assessments for pesticide residues in the food chain. In 2003, Georg Geisler earned his Ph.D. on environmental life-cycle assessment of pesticides at ETH Zurich. In 1999, he had received a Diploma in environmental chemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller University, Jena, Germany.

The investigated blood samples were obtained from allergic outpatients of the Children s Hospital, Apolda, Germany. All analyses were performed at the Friedrich Schiller University, Jena. From atotal of 133 different patients 309 samples were analyzed 62 derived from birch, 154 from grass and 93 from mite-sensitive children. The mean age was 12 years (SD 5.4 years).
