Business excellence model

Our discussion of organizational full potentieil will be more extensive, including specific examples of ftill potentitil for organizations, discussed in the context of the enterprise or business excellence model. We will eilso explore the implications of the expanded role of the ISE on our profession. 

Chin et al. (2003) also developed a knowledge-based expert self-assessment (KES) training toolkit to measure and assess organizational performance based on the evaluation criteria of the renowned business excellence model - The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA).

The usual excuse is, We ll do it soon—when we get some time. Developers are too busy sorting out problems and late updates to do the write-ups. It s funny how these projects are always the ones that require a lot of heroic overtime. See Ed Yourdon s excellent book The Decline of the American Programmer. In such a case, a possible damage limiter is to hire a suitably skilled person to spend a few weeks writing the models. This person may be able to clarify some inconsistencies and at the same time transfer some skills to the existing team. But a lack of documentation is a cultural problem and is not easily fixed. 

As soon as Chemical Leasing has become a standard business model and is met by growing demand, more competitors will inevitably enter the market. By that time, ChemKit will already have set up extensive networks and enjoy an excellent reputation. 

We have explained why it is virtually impossible to grow out of the sector s performance problem. This, however, means it is mandatory to pursue excellence in operations, an area easily neglected in the days when growth was still the answer. In fact, operational efficiency is already high on the agenda of all major specialty chemical companies. Clariant, Degussa, and Schulman are only three among many companies that have embarked on efficiency improvement initiatives. Key for success will be to match the level of sophistication in each step of the business system with the business model(s) selected. 

Common business model/skills set - by implementing any business model outstandingly well across a range of businesses. This skill-based strategy is one of the most challenging to carry out, but it is nevertheless worth considering for those companies that excel in execution in one or several business models. Examples include Ciba in additives (as a new-product developer) and National Starch and Chemical in food starch (as an applications developer). 

In the balance sheet trends against peer groups, Dell and Apple both built a competitive advantage through process innovation. Today, supply chain excellence is no longer about operational excellence and costs instead, when done right, it defines new business models and drives new forms of value. 

Over time, organizations realize that supply excellence needs to be defined by trade-offs in source, make, and deliver. The answer lies in aligning these functions to actualize the business strategy. This realization typically happens in stage 3 of the market-driven value chain maturity model (see Figure 1.3) stimulating the development of S OP processes. 

I would also like to say a few words about culture, and the power that comes from building an entire organization focused on excellence. A strong supply chain culture starts with communication— making sure that people understand the business need and how their roles within the supply chain support and drive the business, ft requires leaders who see themselves as coaches—leaders who explicitly model what "good" looks like and show up as being there to help solve problems. 

They foeus on a few business praetiees that reinforce one another to support the operating model and best aehieve operational excellence.
