Commercial and public transportation heavily relies on human operators. There is growing evidence that sleep loss may play a large role in transportation accidents. A committee formed at the 1986 meeting of the Association of Professional Sleep Societies found that numerous performance failures leading to catastrophic events occur most often at times of day coincident with the temporal patterns of brain processes associated with sleep (3). In addition, an investigation in the Netherlands showed that the highest accident rate in public transit accidents occurred in bus drivers who began an early work shift (4). An assessment of the impact of sleep loss in commercial and public transportation is therefore needed. [Pg.273]

Bus drivers (who have a low level of occupational physical activity) had a higher incidence of mortality from IHD than conductors (who had a higher level of occupational physical activity) (5). Ten years later it was reported that postal clerks had higher death rates from IHD than mail carriers (6,7). Other studies published throughout the 1960s, however, failed to show a relationship between occupational physical activity and IHD (8-10). [Pg.59]

Interrupts are special lines that are connected directly to the processor a device uses an interrupt to get the attention of the CPU when it needs to. It s rather like the cord you use to signal the driver when you need to get off at the next stop when you re a passenger on an actual bus. Just as you would use the stop requested cord to send a signal when you need the bus driver s attention, a computer device uses the interrupt request (IRQ) line to get the attention of the CPU. [Pg.196]

Polluted urban air can and has aggravated chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive ventilatory disease, pulmonary emphysema, and bronchial asthma [11]. The incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis is high in the major cities of India, and air pollution can retard recovery despite adequate therapy. A study of 130 traffic constables, 60 bus drivers and 20 auto mechanics in Madras, who constantly inhaled lead polluted air, recorded that these people had a high frequency of respiratory abnormalities. 61.38% of the bus drivers. [Pg.115]

Stockholm. Results showed that the lorry drivers were exposed to the highest levels of PMio and the taxi drivers to the lowest. Mean PMio concentrations in taxi, bus and lorry drivers were 26, 44 and 57 pg/m, respectively. For bus drivers in the city and suburban area mean PMio concentrations were 47 and 40 pg/m, respectively, whereas average PMio concentrations in lorry drivers in the city and suburban area were 49 and 62 pg/m, respectively. [Pg.504]

Several categories of urban workers were enrolled in a study carried out in Trujillo (Peru) in July 2002 to assess exposure to traffic-related pollutants (Han et al. 2005). Among the 58 workers included in the study, 26 were drivers (8 bus drivers, 8 combi drivers and 10 taxi drivers), 8 street vendors, 6 traffic policemen and 18 gas station attendants. A gravimetric analysis was performed to measure PM2.5 exposure. Data from this study indicated that bus and combi drivers had the highest full-shift PM2.5 exposures their mean exposure levels were 161 and 114 pg/m, while those of gas station attendants were the lowest (64 pg/m ). [Pg.508]
