Traffic policemen

Devoto (D7) reported that blood lead concentrations were approximately the same in city and country dwellers, were higher in traffic policemen, and were highest in foundry workers. The mean concentrations were 21, 20, 28, and 78 tig/100 ml in the four categories of subjects, respectively. Increases in lead levels were related to increases in atmospheric lead concentrations and not to lead in water or food ingested by the subjects. [Pg.291]

Several categories of urban workers were enrolled in a study carried out in Trujillo (Peru) in July 2002 to assess exposure to traffic-related pollutants (Han et al. 2005). Among the 58 workers included in the study, 26 were drivers (8 bus drivers, 8 combi drivers and 10 taxi drivers), 8 street vendors, 6 traffic policemen and 18 gas station attendants. A gravimetric analysis was performed to measure PM2.5 exposure. Data from this study indicated that bus and combi drivers had the highest full-shift PM2.5 exposures their mean exposure levels were 161 and 114 pg/m, while those of gas station attendants were the lowest (64 pg/m ). [Pg.508]

De Sio et al. 2005) that have focused in particular on the effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and related systems in traffic police officers. The data obtained suggested that occupational exposure to PM could affect hormone concentrations. However, it is also well known that traffic policemen are a working population exposed to high levels of stress (Piercecchi-Marti et al. 1999) and psychosocial stressors are able to alter the HPA axis causing alterations to the neuroendocrine system. Moreover, a clear correlation between PM exposure and observed effects on the HPA axis cannot be established since personal PM monitoring of exposed occupational categories has not yet been performed. Consequently, caution should be used when considering the results of these studies. [Pg.515]

If they talked past midnight and Carothers was in a high and happy mood, he drove Labovsky home. Concentrating on their conversation instead of his driving, Carothers almost got a traffic ticket once. A policeman stopped him at a stop sign to say that he had not made a full stop, but Carothers talked his way out of the ticket. [Pg.126]

You can get small comfort from the fact that the world needs your idea, but you, for sure, won t find anybody out there ready to insure you, let alone help you pump for dear life. The fact that an economic policeman spreads the traffic out so that it isn t coming in bunches with a few holes now and then doesn t help your cause, either. [Pg.36]

Later she was able to put more names to faces. Jimi and Stash the two slave boys, Amfetta Mean the other head drag waitress, Bliss the drag king, Neil from the leather shop and his boyfriend the policeman. A discarded cassock from the entree wardrobe would reappear on traffic years later in a photo shoot of Bee s and finish with the Professor when his own had fallen apart. So that everything was somehow linked even if you didn t know it at the time. And the tables were always turning. [Pg.164]

A few years ago I passed through the pretty village of Luarca, in northern Spain. It was summer time and I guessed that its illustrious son Severo Ochoa and his wife Carmen were there. To find out I asked the busy policeman at the central plaza. No, sir. They left yesterday , was his calm answer while commanding the thick traffic. [Pg.235]
