The only synthesis described [60], from Rhone-Poulenc Agrochimie, involves three steps. The initial allylmagnesium bromide adds to the carbonyl double bond of 2-chloro-l-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)ethanone to afford the corresponding alcohol (Scheme 17.11). The aliphatic chlorine is then substituted by the potassium salt of triazole and the tetrahydrofuran ring is formed by attack of the hydroxy group on the brominated double bond. [Pg.628]

Bromine is used as an analytical reagent to determine the amount of unsaturation in organic compounds because carbon—carbon double bonds add bromine quantitatively, and for phenols which add bromine in the ortho and para positions. Halogenated Butyl Rubber. Halogenation at the isoprene site ia butyl mbber proceeds by a halonium ion mechanism leading to a double-bond shift and formation of an exomethylene alkyl haUde. Halogenation of the unsaturation has no apparent effect on the isobutylene backbone chains. This mechanism can be shown to be incorrect for most alkenes on the basis of stereochemistry.
