Brody’s disease

The gene encoding SERCAl is on human chromosome 16 [61] a selective defect in its expression is the cause of Brody s disease [62-66].

Mutations in the SERCA1 pump of skeletal muscle lead to Brody s disease, in which there is delayed muscle relaxation, particularly after exercise, leading to cramps. It is thought to be due to reduced efficiency of the SERCA1 pumps reducing the rate at which Ca2+ can be removed from the cytoplasm (Odermatt et al 2000).

Blood lead is the generally accepted indicator of lead exposure. A highly significant association was found between lead exposure and children s IQ. An increase in blood lead concentration from 10 to 25 pg/dl was associated with a decrease of IQ. Based on such findings the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the USA have recently lowered the community action level for blood in children from 25 to 10 pg/dl (Table 1) (Brody et ak, 1994).
