Production. Worldwide cocoa bean production has increased significantly over the past 10 years from approximately 1.6 million t in the 1979—1980 crop year to over 2.4 million t in 1990. The production share by country has also changed dramatically in the last 10 years. The big gainers are Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Ivory Coast. The large gains in Malaysia and Indonesia have helped to diversify production and partially shield the market from adverse weather-induced supply shocks. The biggest losers in production share have been Brazil and Ghana. Table 2 Hsts production statistics for these countries. [Pg.91]

Extensive, horizontal sandstone plateaus occur in tropical shield areas. Well-known examples are the Precambrian Roraima sandstone formations on the Guiana Shield and the Voltaian sandstone formations in Western Africa. Major occurrences of consolidated sands are found in Northern Africa, in Guyana and Surinam, eastern Peru, northeastern Brazil and in Liberia (western Africa). These sandstone formations have a history of tropical weathering in common they all have a deep weathering mantle of bleached, white sands that are very rich in quartz, poor in clay and excessively drained. Electrolyte contents differ by region In arid and semi-arid areas where evaporation exceeds precipitation, salts and carbonates may accumulate at or near the surface of the soil. [Pg.12]

The largest areas where Precambrian iron-formations are developed are the East European platform (the Krivoy Rog, Kremenchug, Belozerka, and other districts of the Ukrainian shield, the Voronezh, Baltic, and Central Kazakhstan shields), the Lake Superior area on the North American platform, Minas Gerais in Brazil, Hamersley in Australia, Singhbum in India, etc. [Pg.1]

Recent experience suggests that the use of a SRD, intentional or unintentional, is a plausible scenario. One potential SRD source is radioactive Cesium ( Cs), which has many industrial and medical uses. Industry uses Cs in highway construction in devices that measure the density of asphalt. In the Southeast United States, several of these devices have been missing or stolen, with their location unknown (1). The 1987 incident in Goiania, Brazil occurred after thieves stole a Cs therapy source, still contained in its shielding, from a hospital, and sold it for scrap metal. Other involved individuals then broke up the source and shared it. None of the people involved was aware that the device was harmful, and authorities did not detect the incident for 15 days. By that time (1) ... [Pg.160]

This research uses observations of reservoir induced seismicity (RIS) at A u reservoir. NE Brazil, to investigate the spatial and temporal evolution of effective stress in the region and its relationship to fault permeability. A u reservoir was constructed in 1983 and has a capacity of 2.4 x lO m maintained by a 34 m high earth-filled dam constructed on Precambrian shield. Annual reservoir variation is 3-6 m which results in annual seismic activity due to a proposed mechanism of pore pressure diffusion (Ferreira et al. (1995), do Nascimento et al. (2003a)). Digital data at A u... [Pg.617]

Teletherapy uses a radioactive source outside the body to destroy cancerous tumors, and the souree must therefore be much larger than that used in brachytheraphy. The radioactive source used in a teletherapy unit is very dangerous and ean result in lethal doses in less than an hour if not shielded. A typical teletherapy souree is a cylinder about 5 cm in diameter and 5 cm long. The source is housed in a large shielded device called the teletherapy head. A serious emergeney happened in GoiSnia, Brazil, in 1987 when an abandoned teletherapy... [Pg.118]
