International symposia on fluorine were held in 1976 in Kyoto, Japan, in 1979 in Avignon, France, in 1982 in Vancouver, Canada, in 1985 in Santa Cru7, California, in 1988 in East Berlin, East Germany, in 1991 in Bochum, Germany, and in 1994 m Yokohama, Japan The 1997 symposium is planned for Vancouver, Canada... 

A special issue (Volume 6) of the Bulletin de la Societd Chimique de France published in 1986 contained papers contributed to the Moissan symposium Abstracts of the papers presented at this symposium were published as a special volume (Volume 35) of the Journal of Fluorine Chemistry m 1987 A separate volume (Volume 54) of the Journal of Fluorine Chemistry was also issued m 1991 and contained abstracts of papers presented at the Thirteenth International Fluorine Symposium in Bochum, Germany...

The modem process for manufacturing nitric acid depends on the catalytic oxidation of NH3 over heated Pt to give NO in preference to other thermodynamically more favour products (p. 423). The reaction was first systematically studied in 1901 by W. Ostwald (Nobel Prize 1909) and by 1908 a commercial plant near Bochum. Germany, was producing 3 tonnes/day. However, significant expansion in production depended on the economical availability of synthetic ammonia by the Haber-Bosch process (p. 421).
