Owing to its properties, methanol is not recommended for aircraft or marine fuel uses. Solvents. Common terminologies used interchangeably are solvents, diluents, reducers, and thinners (Table 2). Technically, solvents are materials that completely dissolve resins in the ink vehicle. Diluents are Hquids that may not completely dissolve the resin by itself. Solvents can also be thinners, but most often thinners are blends of solvents and diluents. Reducer is another name for thinner, referring to the solvent blends used to reduce the viscosity of a virgin ink on the press to miming viscosity. [Pg.251]

The alcohols, proprietary denatured ethyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol, are commonly used for E-type inks. Many E-type inks benefit from the addition of small amounts of ethyl acetate, MEK, or normal propyl acetate to the solvent blends. Aromatic hydrocarbon solvents are used for M-type inks. Polystyrene resins are used to reduce the cost of top lacquers. T-type inks are also reduced with aromatic hydrocarbons. Acryflc resins are used to achieve specific properties for V-type inks. Vehicles containing vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate copolymer resins make up the vinyl ink category. Ketones are commonly used solvents for these inks. [Pg.252]

In the same way that natural mbber is predominandy used in blends, it is also predominandy used in tire manufacture. Its excellent building tack, low heat buildup, low rolling resistance, and good low temperature performance make it the polymer of choice for many parts of tire constmction, for both passenger and tmck vehicles. The effects of radiali2ation and demand for low rolling resistance and good low temperature performance have all tended to benefit natural mbber, especially in tmck tire constmction, as shown in Table 9. [Pg.272]

In 1997 a total 1.3 billion gals of ethanol fuel was produced in the United States. Proposed new low sulfur conventional gasoline standards could greatly increase the demand for ethanol since desulfurization may lower gasoline octane. Almost all fuel ethanol is used as gasohol, but some is used to make E-85 (85% ethanol and 15% gasoline). E-85 can be used in flexible-fuel vehicles (FFVs) which can operate on gasoline or ethanol blends of to 85 percent ethanol. [Pg.161]

Another electric vehicle — the electrically driven submarine — presented a continuous challenge to lead-acid battery separator development since the 1930s and 1940s. The wood veneers originally used in electric vehicles proved too difficult to handle, especially if tall cells had to be manufactured. Therefore much intense effort took place to develop the first plastic separators. In this respect the microporous hard rubber separator, still available today in a more advanced version, and a micro-porous PVC separator (Porvic I) merit special mention 28].
