These rosin-based sizes, whether paste, Hquid, or emulsions, can be used to size all grades of paper that are produced at acid pH. The latter include bleached or unbleached kraft Hnerboard and bag paper, bleached printing and writing grades, and cylinder board. In addition, polyaluminum compounds have been used in place of alum, most notably, polyaluminum chloride (48), which can reduce barium deposits where these have been a problem. The barium chloride by-product is more water-soluble than barium sulfate. Other polyaluminum compounds such as polyhydroxylated forms of alum and polyaluminum siHcosulfate have been evaluated as alum replacements. [Pg.18]

Closed-Mill Concept. The closed-mill concept, or water circuit closure, has been studied by the pulp and paper industry for many years. In some parts of the paper manufacturing process, up to 98% of the water is recycled within the process, eg, the wet end of the paper machine. However, in the pulp mill, especiaUy kraft mills, effluents are produced owing to the need to purge from the system various metals that come in with the wood, as weU as organic by-products from the pulping process, additives, and especially chloride ions that originate in the bleach plant. [Pg.283]

The biggest use of chlorine dioxide is in bleaching wood pulp. In some mills, much of the chlorine and hypochlorite has been replaced by chlorine dioxide to reduce the amount of chlorinated by-products. Chlorine dioxide is also used to bleach textiles, flour, and edible fats and oils. [Pg.145]

Uses. /-Butyl hypochlorite has been found useful in upgrading vegetable oils (273) and in the preparation of a-substituted acryflc acid esters (274) and esters of isoprene halohydrins (275). Numerous patents describe its use in cross-linking of polymers (qv) (276), in surface treatment of mbber (qv) (277), and in odor control of polymer latexes (278). It is used in the preparation of propylene oxide (qv) in high yield with Httle or no by-products (269,279). Fluoroalkyl hypochlorites are useful as insecticides, initiators for polymerizations, and bleaching and chlorinating agents (280). [Pg.475]

When chlorine dioxide is used for pulp bleaching in conjunction with the Kraft (sulfide) process for chemical pulping, by-product sodium sulfate can be used as a source of makeup sulfur and sodium consumed in the chemical cycle. The demand for sodium and sulfur in pulp bleaching is related to the loss of these chemicals through carryover in unbleached pulp. As process improvements have sought to reduce pollution from pulp mills, less sodium sulfate makeup is required. The trends in pulp bleaching to increase substitution of chlorine with chlorine dioxide have caused an oversupply of sodium sulfate, so that this by-product is often regarded as waste (81). [Pg.484]

Other industrial applications of electrolysis include extraction/purification of metals from ores, electroplating, and the manufacture of certain chemicals such as sodium hydroxide. In the latter, sodium chloride solution when electrolysed is converted to sodium hydroxide to produce chlorine at the anode and hydrogen at the cathode. Both of these gaseous by-products are collected for industrial use chlorine is used in the production of bleach and PVC hydrogen is used as a fuel, to saturate fats, and to make ammonia. [Pg.44]

In a falling film evaporator (4) a water-paraffin mixture is distilled off and completely pumped back to the reactor. The resulting product is separated into a 60% sulfuric acid fraction and paraffin-containing alkanesulfonic acid (5), which is bleached by hydrogen peroxide (6). In a stirred vessel (7) the alkanesulfonic acid is neutralized by 50% sodium hydroxide solution until the pH is exactly 7.
