Environmental impacts birds

The environmental impact of PCNs has not been extensively investigated and PCNs are not routinely measured in analytical studies of extracts from environmental samples. However, PCNs have been identified in birds of prey in Britain (69) and The Netherlands (70), in a drainage ditch in Florida, and in sediments from San Francisco Bay (71). [Pg.67]

The growing concerns about the public health and environmental impacts of pesticides have led many in the general public and the government to question whether all the benefits of pesticides, such as the perfect red apple, are worth the associated costs of environmental pollution, human illness and loss of life, bird kills, and the destruction of other beneficial natural organisms. Indeed, some agriculturists have been viewed as primarily concerned with promoting commercial interests rather than protecting public health and the environment. [Pg.9]

In Tables 14.9 and 14.10, the last column reports the environmental impact points (EIPs) for typical applications of organic and conventional pesticides derived from the Pesticide Environmental Assessment System, or PEAS. This model produces relative rankings of risks based on defined use rates and use patterns (the formulation used to apply a pesticide, timing, target of the application, spray equipment used, etc). PEAS scores reflect an equal balancing of acute pesticide risks to farm workers, chronic risks via dietary exposure and exposures to birds, Daphnia and bees. [Pg.279]

Even species that are not known to produce bioactive metabolites may have a large environmental impact, such as Emiliania huxeleyi. This haptomonad protist blooms periodically in the Bering Sea at the detriment of diatoms, disruptii the food chain with massive death of migratory birds and fish losses. Mnemiopsis leidyi is another major such problem this comb jelly has invaded the Black Sea, subtracting zooplankton to fish. [Pg.279]

Environmental Impacts Aldicarb is acutely toxic to mammals, and very highly toxic to birds, aquatic invertebrates and fish . [Pg.32]

Environmental Impacts Monocrotophos is extremely toxic to birds and is used as a bird poison. It is also very poisonous to mammals, and highly toxic to bees. [Pg.33]

Environmental Impacts Methyl parathion is highly toxic for aquatic invertebrates , and moderately toxic to mammals such as rats, dogs and rabbits . The chemical has been implicated in the deaths of waterfowl and the acute poisoning of fish, birds, cattle and wild animals. In 1995 a mixture of methyl parathion and endosulfan led to the death of over 240,000 fish in Alabama, when heavy rain washed the pesticides washed from the cotton fields and into rivers . [Pg.33]

We must always recognize that pesticide metabolism studies cannot be considered as an end in themselves but rather, they are a means toward an end. For the ultimate value of a metabolism study, be it in microorganisms, plants, birds, laboratory mammals, or v atever, is its yield of data valuable toward further assessment of the toxicological significance of the pesticide in question to lower organisms (i.e., its environmental impact) or, more importantly, to assess toxicological significance to man himself. [Pg.265]

Environmental impact It is undeniable that the environmental impact of the disaster was catastrophic. The oil spiU lasted for about 87 days before it was stopped. An independent analysis indicated that the total spilled oil was around 185 million gallons plus another 33.8 million gallons that were captured by BP. As a result, hundreds of miles of shoreline were oiled and large areas of the sea were closed to fishermen. Moreover, wildlife was affected by the oil spill thousands of birds, fish, turtles and marine mammals were killed. [Pg.1987]
