Supermolecular interlocked macromolecules have been paid much attention as candidates of smart materials. Polyrotaxane (PRX) is a typical example. PEG/ cyclodextrin (CD)-based polyrotaxane was firstly reported by Harada and coworkers by attachment of stoppers to pseudopolyrotaxane (pPRX) consisting of a PEG and CDs [263]. Subsequently, many CD-based PRXs have been designed and prepared as smart materials such as biomaterials, light-harvesting antennae, insulating polymers, stimuli-responsive molecular shuttles etc. [264—268]. [Pg.94]

One of the most exciting fields of research involves the study of composites, materials with two or more components with properties different from those of the components. Composites have revolutionized fields as diverse as sports and recreation and air transportation and military equipment. Another active field of research focuses on biomaterials, synthetic or semisynthetic products that have applications in living systems. Today researchers are developing artificial skin, blood, nerves, and other body components that can be used for the repair of damaged tissues. Nanotechnology is perhaps the most revolutionary of all areas of materials research. The subject deals with components of very small dimensions, comparable to those of atoms and molecules. Smart materials are yet another topic of... [Pg.18]

India is now engaged in a broad spectrum of scientific research, both fundamental and applied, in Government, Universities and Private Research Establishments. In recent years there has been extraordinary success in developing new polymers, ceramics, composites, superconductors, nanomaterials, smart materials and biomaterials. Biotechnology, Genetic Engineering and Biomedical Research are some other fields in which India has started entering. [Pg.48]

Much work has been done in recent years on the so-called active , adaptive , intelligent , magic , or smart materials [1]. All of these may be termed collectively as biomaterials , including the experimental planar bilayer lipid membranes (BLMs) and spherical liposomes. [Pg.226]
