Stimulus responsive

Polymeric materials are unique owing to the presence of a glass-transition temperature. At the glass-transition temperatures, the specific volume of the material and its rate of change changes, thus, affecting a multitude of physical properties. Numerous types of devices could be developed based on this type of stimuli—response behavior however, this technology is beyond the scope of this article. [Pg.250]

In their efforts to construct stimuli-responsive, supramolecular amphiphiles, Frechet et al. [126-129] reported the synthesis of a novel series of AB and ABA block copolymers via the Williamson ether synthesis (e.g., 47, Fig. 21). Polyethylene glycols (PEGs) of different lengths were used as the linear hydrophilic B block while polyaryl ether dendrons of different sizes were used as the hydro-phobic A block. These copolymers were characterized by optical microscopy,... [Pg.54]

These double hydrophilic block copolymers exhibit stimuli-responsive properties and have potential biotech applications. [Pg.87]

Supermolecular interlocked macromolecules have been paid much attention as candidates of smart materials. Polyrotaxane (PRX) is a typical example. PEG/ cyclodextrin (CD)-based polyrotaxane was firstly reported by Harada and coworkers by attachment of stoppers to pseudopolyrotaxane (pPRX) consisting of a PEG and CDs [263]. Subsequently, many CD-based PRXs have been designed and prepared as smart materials such as biomaterials, light-harvesting antennae, insulating polymers, stimuli-responsive molecular shuttles etc. [264—268]. [Pg.94]

Thermoresponsive polymeric micelles with PIPAAm block copolymers can be expected to combine passive spatial targeting specificity with a stimuli-responsive targeting mechanism. We have developed LCSTs of PIPAAm chains with preservation of the thermoresponsive properties such as a phase transition rate by copolymerization with hydrophobic or hydrophilic comonomers into PIPAAm main chains. Micellar outer shell chains with the LCSTs adjusted between body temperature and hyperthermic temperature can play a dual role in micelle stabilization at a body temperature due to their hydrophilicity and initiation of drug release by hyperthermia resulting from outer shell structural deformation. Simultaneously, micelle interactions with cells could be enhanced at heated sites due... [Pg.45]
