Biodiversity monitoring

To see if the selected biodiversity monitoring stations were correctly chosen, the station net decided upon will also be revised in a few years, when it is possible to evaluate the data collected. It is being discussed whether it is possible to make use of community-based monitoring for some species that are more easy to detect and identify.

A decade ago, the state of biodiversity and productivity of the Blak Sea ecosystem led to suggestions that the process of degradation of the Black Sea is catastrophic or even irreversible. However, environmental monitoring, conducted over the past 10 years, reflects continued improvements in the state of the Black Sea ecosystem. These improvements appear to be the direct or indirect results of reduced economic activity in the region, to a certain degree of protective measures taken by governments and international organizations.

During the period of implementation of the Water Framework Directive we have also performed some screening activities for the priority hazardous substances and priority substances. The next step in developing our monitoring system will focus on biodiversity, one of the Swedish environmental objectives mentioned in Section 2.1.2. This monitoring should be designed to show the presence, nature and persistence of possible threats to biodiversity. 

We are investigating two different ways to monitor biodiversity. One concerns the status for red-Usted species and early warnings if anything is happening. The other focuses on invasive alien species and discovering introductions at an early stage.
