Biocides should not be present in water used for aquaculture. Sources of herbicides and pesticides are mnoff from agricultural land, contamination of the water table, and spray drift from crop-dusting activity. Excessive levels of phosphoms and nitrogen may occur where mnoff from fertilized land enters an aquaculture faciUty either from surface mnoff or groundwater contamination. Trace metal levels should be low as indicated in Tables 4 and 5. [Pg.20]

Other Uses. As a biocide, chlorine dioxide is more effective than chlorine over a wider pH range. Chlorine dioxide is also less corrosive and more compatible with some materials of constmction. Chlorine dioxide has a wide variety of small appHcations in drinking water, food processing (qv), cooling towers, and oil recovery. Slimicide and biocide toxic pollutants containing pentachlorophenol are used at mills in the pulp, paper, and paperboard industry. Initially, pentachlorophenol was used as a replacement for heavy metal salts, particularly mercuric types. Trichlorophenols are also used because of their availability as a byproduct from the manufacture of certain herbicides. Formulations containing organo-bromides and organo-sulfur compounds are also being used. Mercury is mined predominantly as HgS in cinnabar ore and is then converted commercially to a variety of chemical forms. Key industrial and commercial applications of mercury are found in the electrolytic production of chlorine and caustic soda the manufacture of electrical equipment, thermometers, and other instruments fluorescent lamps dental amalgam and artisanal gold production. Use in pharmaceuticals and in biocides has declined substantially in recent years, but occasional use in antiseptics and folk medicines is still encountered. Thimerosal, an organomercurial preservative that is metabolized in part to ethylmercury, has been removed from almost all the vaccines in which it was formerly present. Environmental exposure to mercury from the burning of fossil fuels, or the bioaccumulation of methylmercury in fish, remains a concern in some regions of the world. Low-level exposure to mercury released from dental amalgam fillings occurs, but systemic toxicity from this source has not been established. [Pg.1235]
