Bioactive compounds anticancer activity

Over the last two decades, the scientific community has become aware of the potential health-related benefits of antioxidants and the properties of polyphenols-rich dark chocolate and cocoa. More than 200 studies were reported on bioactive compounds, chemical compositions, and health benefits of cocoa and cocoa products. Many of the proposed health-protective activities associated with the crmsumption of cocoa and chocolate have been attributed to flavan-3-ols, including monomers. Reported pharmacological activities of procyanidins include antioxidative and anticancer effects, protection against cardiovascular disease, risk reduction of blood clotting, protection against urinary tract infectirms, decrease of LDL-c, decrease of blood pressure, and improvement of endothelium vasodilatation. Moreover, there is some scientific evidence about an increase in blood flow and perfusion of the brain by... [Pg.2312]

Catharanthus roseus is an important dicotyledonous medicinal plant that contains various anticancer components. The most important constituents with biological activity in Catharanthus roseus are terpenoid indole alkaloids. The analytical methods for determining bioactive compounds in Catharanthus alkaloid are summarized in this chapter. HPLC and CE methods are mainly introduced the advantages and limitations of each technique are also compared and discussed. [Pg.4326]

Many polycyclic natural compounds that contain bromine atoms have been isolated from several different marine organisms (Fig. 9.3) [7, 8]. Most of them possess bioactivities of pharmacological interest such as antibacterial, anticancer, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral activities. Natural products that have an a-bromo-p,p-dimethylcyclohexane structure are also bioactive compounds. Their biosynthesis... [Pg.301]

This chapter has introduced the aldol and related allylation reactions of carbonyl compounds, the allylation of imine compounds, and Mannich-type reactions. Double asymmetric synthesis creates two chiral centers in one step and is regarded as one of the most efficient synthetic strategies in organic synthesis. The aldol and related reactions discussed in this chapter are very important reactions in organic synthesis because the reaction products constitute the backbone of many important antibiotics, anticancer drugs, and other bioactive molecules. Indeed, study of the aldol reaction is still actively pursued in order to improve reaction conditions, enhance stereoselectivity, and widen the scope of applicability of this type of reaction. [Pg.188]

Using the technique of activity-guided chromatographic isolation, it is possible to generate many structurally novel bioactive plant secondary metabolites, and examples have been provided in this chapter of plant secondary metabolites with potential anticancer or potential cancer chemopreventive activity, comprised by compounds representative of the chal-cone, flavanone, flavone, furocoumarin, isoflavone, lignan, oligostilbenoid (resveratrol... [Pg.34]
