In taking this approach, someone new to the field of surface chemistry and catalysis can hopefully obtain a perspective on how more recent atom resolved information confirms or questions long-standing tenets. There is, therefore, a historical flavour to the book, with the first chapter dealing briefly with how did we get to where we are now . This inevitably means that the views expressed reflect personal perspectives but are very much influenced by the outstanding contributions from those who have pioneered the development of STM in surface chemistry and catalysis, of which groups at the Fritz-Haber Institut in Berlin and the universities at Aahrus, Berkeley and Stanford have been at the forefront. [Pg.230]

But when the Allied investigators got around to Auschwitz, his colleagues had weakened and now it was fantastic for them to pretend that they scarcely knew him. Schmitz admitted that, after consulting the other directors, he had sent Krauch to work for Goering. Schmitz admitted that for years he and Krauch had put their heads together twice a week in Berlin. Then Krauch s colleagues really "threw him a curve" (he liked these American expressions). Every last one of them blamed Auschwitz on "compulsory quotas imposed by the government." And who shoved these quotas down their throats They did not say "Why, the G.B. Chem office, which was too big for any one man." No, they said "G.B. Chem — he set the quotas."... [Pg.240]

Charge-transfer overpotential — The essential step of an - electrode reaction is the charge (- electron or - ion) transfer across the phase boundary (- interface). In order to overcome the activation barrier related to this process and thus enhance the desirable reaction, an - overpotential is needed. It is called charge-transfer (or transfer or electron transfer) overpotential (f/ct). This overpotential is identical with the - activation overpotential. Both expressions are used in the literature [i-iv]. Refs. [i] Bard A], Faulkner LR (2001) Electrochemical methods. Wiley, New York, pp 87-124 [ii] Erdey-Gruz T (1972) Kinetics of electrode processes. The idea is expressed in J. T. Eller, Seconde dissertation sur les elemens , Memoires de lAcademie RoyaldesSciencesetBellesLettres, [Berlin], 2 (1746),pp. 25-48, on 43-4. This is held at Glasgow University Library Special Collections, but that copy was acquired as part of the Hunterian Collection in the early nineteenth century. If Witt was able to consult Eller s work while at Glasgow then it would probably have been in the library of an individual whom he knew, such as Black or Anderson. [Pg.199]
