Water in the mantle is fonnd in different states as a fluid especially near sub-duction zones, as a hydrous phase and as a hydroxyl point defect in nominally anhydrous minerals. 8D-values between -90 and -110%c have been obtained by Bell and Ihinger (2000) analyzing nominally anhydrous mantle minerals (garnet, pyroxene) containing trace quantities of OH. Nominally anhydrous minerals from mantle xenoliths are the most D-depleted of all mantle materials with 5D-values 50%c lower than MORE (O Leary et al. 2005). This difference may either imply that these minerals represent an isotopically distinct mantle reservoir or that the samples analyzed have exchanged hydrogen dnring or after their ascent from the mantle (meteoric/water interaction ). [Pg.106]

Bronkema and Bell (2007) analyzed the Raman bands of surface methoxy species and of supported vanadia to elucidate the mechanism of methanol oxidation to formaldehyde. In their detailed investigation, insight from Raman spectroscopy was combined with information from EXAFS and XANES spectroscopies. The authors discussed the reaction pathways in the presence and absence of 02, and identified the roles of various lattice oxygen sites. Formaldehyde was found to decompose to H2 and CO in the absence of 02 (Bronkema and Bell, 2007). Similar observations were reported by Korhonen et al. Using mass spectrometry techniques, the mass distribution of peptide mixtures can be experimentally determined and compared to the theoretical mass distribution this distribution has the shape of a beU curve, and can be calculated using various computer programs. These data provide important information on the composition of the analyzed peptide mixture. While it is not possible to verify the correct representation of each individual peptide within the nnixture, the mass distribution curve can be used to confirm the correct overall composition of the nnixture. It is also often possible to confirm the correct amino acid at a defined position of a peptide nnixture. For example, the average mass (i.e., the peak of the mass distribution bell curve) of the mixture AC-AXXXXX-NH2 (716) is sufficiently different from that of the mixture AC-YXXXXX-NH2 (808). Furthermore, an incorrect mass distribution of the peptide nnixture can indicate problems that occurred during the synthesis, such as incomplete side-chain deprotection of a particular annino acid. [Pg.858]

Another technique is the nuclear reaction analysis of Lanford et al. (1976), which was applied to NAMs by Rossman et al. (1988), Skogby et al. (1990), Maldener et al. (2001), and Bell et al. (2003). This technique has the advantage of yielding absolute hydrogen concentrations. It is a near-surface technique in which the hydrogen concentration is measured as a function of depth. The spatial resolution of the technique is at the millimeter level Bell et al. (2003) prepared polished surfaces 5x5 mm in area. Maldener et al. (2001) state that 1 mm diameter samples can be analyzed. This technique has been used to calibrate absorption coefficients for IR spectroscopy (e.g., Maldener et al., 2001 Bell et al., 2003). Bell et al. (2003) applied this technique to hydrogen in olivine, and found some of the previous estimates of hydrogen concentration in olivine need to be revised upward by factors between 2 and 4. Such a correction cannot be applied uniformly to all previous studies, because their new calibrations are specific to polarized spectra. [Pg.1039]
