The best way of finding the entry for a particular compound in the Beilstein Handbook is to identify in which volume the compound is listed, and then to consult the appropriate volume index. In order to identify the volume of interest a few basic principles of the Beilstein System need to be understood and these are described below. [Pg.1406]

The Structure "Axis" of the BeiIstein Grid . The Beilstein Handbook can be considered as a grid with a time axis (the six Series) and a structure axis. The individual entries containing the information on two (hypothetical) compounds are shown schematically in this way in Figure 1. [Pg.81]

EKSTASE is used to input data from the BEILSTEIN Handbook. Numeric and factual data are entered separately from the structural formulas as most of the structures are converted automatically into a topological representation (see below). The person who enters the input can choose from various panels to enter different kinds of data (e.g. reactions, physical parameters or citations). To make corrections, he can scroll back and forth on the screen or he can go back to a specific data entry. The systematic lUPAC-names of the reference compounds are automatically copied from the BEILSTEIN Registry tapes so as to avoid manual input errors. These compound names are German for Handbook Series H to E-IV and English starting from E-V (see below). [Pg.89]

The concordance numbers are the cross referencing page numbers used to indicate the (theoretical or actual) pages on which entries on any particular structure would have been published in earlier Supplementary Series of the Beilstein Handbook. Concordance numbers are entirely dependent on structural features. Concordance numbers are searchable online (in the form of the Source Code SO). [Pg.42]

Within each series of the Handbook the entries are ordered using the Beilstein System of Compound Classification this is a set of rules which enables each organic compound to be assigned a position within the Handbook solely on the basis of its molecular structure conversely, knowledge of the rules enables any compound from the c. 1 million compounds already described in the Handbook to be found rapidly, purely on the basis of its structure. A further advantage of the system is that many structurally related compounds are brought together within the same volume of the Handbook. [Pg.1405]

Derivatives are entered in the Handbook following the entry for the registry compound the order is again determined by the Beilstein System. (If the registry compound was not reported in the literature covered by a particular series, its entry is omitted, but this does not affect the ordering of its derivatives in the Handbook.)... [Pg.1408]

The Beilstein Entry and the BeiIstein Supplementary Series. In the production of the Handbook, all relevant critically evaluated information about any one structure is brought together in one unit, the Beilstein entry. Then the information collected for the next structure is critically evaluated and summarized in the next separate entry. This process is carried out for all the information published in the original literature over a specific time period, and published as a Supplementary Series to the Handbook. [Pg.81]
