Behavioral problems/difficulties

Problems related to inadequate sleep in children and adolescents are fairly common. Studies have shown that inadequate or irregular sleep usually results in some variation of daytime sleepiness, but may also result in behavior problems, difficulties with alertness, concentration, attentiveness, problem solving, memory, school problems, and other daytime behavior problems. Adolescents health may also be compromised by poor sleep/wake habits, with increased irritability... [Pg.162]

Medications to manage behavioral problems may be needed at any or all stages of dementia. The key issue is the same at all three stages. The behavioral problem should be eliminated (or at least minimized) without worsening the patient s intellectual difficulties further. This is sometimes no small task because dementia patients may be quite sensitive to the sedative or anticholinergic effects of many psychiatric medications. [Pg.305]

Adverse reactions occurring in at least 3% of pediatric patients include abnormal gait, aggressive reaction, anorexia, ataxia, confusion, constipation, difficulty with concentration/attention, difficulty with memory, dizziness, epistaxis, fatigue, gastroenteritis, hyperkinesia, increased saliva, injury, insomnia, nausea, nervousness, personality disorder (behavior problems), pneumonia, psychomotor slowing, purpura, skin disorder, somnolence, speech disorders/related speech problems, urinary incontinence, viral infection, weight decrease. [Pg.1270]

Sleep problems can cause considerable difficulty in and of themselves and can also exacerbate and be exacerbated by other psychiatric and behavioral problems in individuals with MR. The Expert Consensus Panel (Rush and Frances, 2000) recommended sleep hygiene... [Pg.627]

Over 50% of Americans who currently drink report having a close relative who abuses alcohol 25% are children of an alcoholic parent. Alcohol abuse can devastate families by causing separation, divorce, and domestic violence, as well child abuse and neglect. Six million children live with an alcohol-abusing parent, and this can result in problems at school such as low attendance, academic difficulties, attention deficit disorders, and behavioral problems. Each year in America, more than 100,000 people die from alcohol-related accidents (cars, falls, fires, drownings, burns), cancer, liver disease, and stroke. [Pg.28]

Women who smoke marijuana during pregnancy may have low birth-weight babies who are at risk for developmental difficulties and are more susceptible to disease. Like other drugs, THC also crosses the placental barrier and affects the embryo as it grows some studies indicate that this may increase a baby s risk of developing leukemia. THC also passes into breast milk, where research has shown that it can affect a child s motor development. Toddlers whose parents smoke marijuana have been found to be angrier and to have more behavioral problems than children whose parents do not use marijuana. [Pg.294]

In the past, when softwoods were the source of most pulpwood, the major problems caused by extractives were those of pitch, largely resulting from the resin and fatty acids and unsaponifiable materials. Next came the problems caused by the discoloration of pulp due to the presence of polyphenols in hardwoods, notably eucalypts. Now with the increasing use of relatively unfamiliar tropical hardwoods, some of which contain large amounts of extractives, new problems are arising due to polyphenols and a group of resins different from those previously encountered. Differences in their behavior include difficulties in their removal by bleaching and in their removal from pulp mill equipment (e.g., 99). New methods need to be devised to minimize their influence and overcome these difficulties. [Pg.881]

Hyperactivity—Hyperactive, or in medical terminology hyperkinetic, is a label that has been applied to between 5 and 20% of all school-age children in the United States. Unfortunately, hyperactivity is a vague term and some ill-mannered children have been conveniently labeled as hyperactive. Hyperactive children are described as being significantly more restless, easily distracted, inattentive and emotionally labile relative to their peers. Attention is drawn to hyperactive children in situations which require sedentary and attentive behavior thus, these children usually come under medical and psychological evaluation because of behavioral problems and learning difficulties at school. Furthermore, the hyperactive child may be physically sound but have difficulty with motor skills and coordination. [Pg.101]

Despite this variety and the implicit difficulty of exactly defining the topic of Chemical Physics, there are a certain number of basic problems that concern the properties of individual molecules and atoms as well as the behavior of statistical ensembles of molecules and atoms. This new series is devoted to this group of problems which are characteristic of modern Chemical Physics. [Pg.417]
