The Beckman rearrangement of the oxime of 4-methyl-5-acetylthiazole (12) gives low yields (30% ) of 4-methyl-5-acetamidothiazole (Scheme 12) (58). 

The two principal appHcations of countercurrent flow are found in the Beckman elutriators and the Haemonetics apheresis equipment. The Beckman elutriators are capable of very specific cell separation of small batches of cells. The Haemonetics surge technique can separate platelets and lymphocytes from four Hters of donor blood in one hour and forty minutes. 

Beckman Elutriation Method. The Beckman elutriation method uses a chamber designed so that the centrifugal effect of the radial inward fluid flow is constant (Fig. 3). The separation chambers are made of transparent epoxy resin which faciUtates observation of the movements of the cell boundary in strobe light illumination. This enables detection of the radius at which the cells are separating. When a mixture of cells, eg, mononuclear white cells, enters the chamber, separation can be achieved by fine tuning centrifuge speed and inward fluid flow to the specific cell group. This is a laboratory method suitable for relatively small numbers of cells. Chambers are available in sizes to handle 2-3 x 10 , 1 2 x 10 , and 1 x 10 ° cells. The Beckman chambers can be appHed to collect mononuclear cells from bone marrow aspirates.

When a test result for a particular specimen is found to have an elevated, out of method range value, some analy2ers, eg, Beckman CX3, can automatically repeat the sampling from the same specimen. For elevated concentrations, the precision of the optical system is reduced so an automatic dilution of the sample, eg, by aspiration of a reduced amount of sample, is provided during the second sampling. 

It is estimated that the worldwide clinical chemistry diagnostics market is about 3 biUion. This amount includes an estimated 700 million in instmment sales, and 2.3 bUHon in sales of reagents and consumables. It is imphcit that increasing the value of Ly will raise the supersaturation and growth rate to levels at which mass homogeneous nucleation can occur, thereby leading to periodic upsets of the system or cycling [Randolph, Beer, and Keener, Am. In.st. Chem. Eng. J., 19, 1140 (1973)]. That this could actually happen was demonstrated experimentally by Randolph, Beckman, and Kraljevich [Am. In.st. Chem. Eng. Beckman, Brennecke, and their research groups were the first to realize that the combination of SCCO2 and an ionic liquid can offer special advantages.
