When bricks contain 70%-73% alumina, they are called mullite bricks. These bricks contain very little silica modifications of tridymite or cristo-balite. As this much alumina content cannot be obtained from naturally occurring minerals, these bricks are made by mixing in bauxite. When we want 100% alumina bricks, bauxite is used with a small amount of clay. Clay serves as the bonding agent. Bauxite powder is prepared after fusing. The fused bauxite is crushed and ground. Mullite bricks contain mullite and corundum. As seen in Figure 23.1, these bricks remain solid at up to 1810°C. [Pg.424]

Most metals will precipitate as the hydroxide in the presence of concentrated NaOH. Metals forming amphoteric hydroxides, however, remain soluble in concentrated NaOH due to the formation of higher-order hydroxo-complexes. For example, Zn and AP will not precipitate in concentrated NaOH due to the formation of Zn(OH)3 and Al(OH)4. The solubility of AP in concentrated NaOH is used to isolate aluminum from impure bauxite, an ore of AI2O3. The ore is powdered and placed in a solution of concentrated NaOH where the AI2O3 dissolves to form A1(0H)4T Other oxides that may be present in the ore, such as Fe203 and Si02, remain insoluble. After filtering, the filtrate is acidified to recover the aluminum as a precipitate of Al(OH)3. [Pg.211]

Cracking catalysts include synthetic and natural sihca-alumina, treated bentonite clay, fuller s earth, aluminum hydrosUicates, and bauxite. These catalysts are in the form of beads, pellets, and powder, and are used in a fixed, moving, or fluidized bed. The catalyst is usually heated and hfted into the reactor area by the incoming oil feed which, in mrn, is immediately vaporized upon contact. This lower-ranking chemical, which has nowhere near the production volume of sulfuric and phosphoric acids, is consistently in the top 50 and is very important to some industries. Aluminum sulfate is manufactured from aluminum oxide (alumina, bauxite). The crude ore can be used. A mixture with sulfuric acid is heated at 105-110°C for 15-20 hr. Aluminum (properly called aluminium, but the former name prevails in North America) is found in combination with Si and 0 as aluminosilicates in rocks, and as its ore, bauxite.
