The BPB is a single-channel, constant-current, charge-balanced stimulator. The stimulation output is capacitance-coupled, which also prevents direct connection between the battery or battery-generated DC voltages and the tissue. Stimulation pulse amplitude, width, and frequency can be independently adjusted. In addition, triggering events can cause the stimulation to be dehvered continuously or in a pulse burst, which can be ramped up and down with a variety of Start/Stop times. 

The input/output power at 25°C for a module calculated by extrapolation of I-V curves for a 5 s constant current charge/discharge is shown in Fig. 12.5. As the rated output/input power for the module is 12.5 kW and 8 kW, we can use the module between 15 and 90% SOC. This wide serviceable SOC range means the ability to supply or receive power at almost any time and allows the battery to have a large... 

This is a charge conducted at a constant rate. The rate is usually at or below the finish rate. A trickle charge is a low-rate constant-current charge given to maintain the battery at a fuUy charged condition. This should be used only when the charging rate is matched to the battery. Some portable power and a few smaU-size stationary batteries use the trickle-charge method. 

The situation is different for sealed nickel/cadmium batteries, due to the internal oxygen cycle. Figure 1.15 illustrates the heat evolution of a sealed nickel/ cadmium battery during constant-current charging with a charge factor of 1.4 (such an amount of overcharge is usual for conventional charging methods but can only be applied to comparably small batteries < 10 Ah).

The most common charging method for the sealed nickel-metal hydride battery is a constant-current charge, but with the current limited to avoid an excessive rise of temperature or exceeding the rate of the oxygen-recombination reaction. 

The manufacturers of these batteries recommend constant-current charging at the 10 to 20-h rate for most applications. However, constant-potential and pulsed charging techniques have also been applied.
