We have found that display of nuclear trajectories and the simultaneous evolution of charge distributions to yield insightful details of complicated processes. The Z-spray inlet causes ions and neutrals to follow different paths after they have been formed from the electrically charged spray produced from a narrow inlet tube. The ions can be drawn into a mass analyzer after most of the solvent has evaporated away. The inlet derives its name from the Z-shaped trajectory taken by the ions, which ensures that there is little buildup of products on the narrow skimmer entrance into the mass spectrometer analyzer region. Consequently, in contrast to a conventional electrospray source, the skimmer does not need to be cleaned frequently and the sensitivity and performance of the instrument remain constant for long periods of time. [Pg.69]

This last m/z value is easy to measure accurately, and, if its relationship to the true mass is known (n = 10), then the true mass can be measured very accurately. The multicharged ions have typical m/z values of <3000 Da, which means that conventional quadrupole or magnetic-sector analyzers can be used for mass measurement. Actually, the spectrum consists of a series of multicharged protonated molecular ions [M + nWY for each component present in the sample. Each ion in the series differs by plus and minus one charge from adjacent ions ([M + uH] + n -an integer series for example, 1, 2, 3,. .., etc.). Electrophoresis and electro osmosis can be used to enhance conventional cake filtration. Electrodes of suitable polarity are placed on either side of the filter medium so that the incoming particles move toward the upstream electrode, away from the medium. As most particles carry negative charge, the electrode upstream of the medium is usuaHy positive. The electric field can cause the suspended particles to form a more open cake or, in the extreme, to prevent cake formation altogether by keeping aH particles away from the medium. [Pg.390]

The most significant commercial product is barium titanate, BaTiO, used to produce the ceramic capacitors found in almost all electronic products. As electronic circuitry has been rniniaturized, demand has increased for capacitors that can store a high amount of charge in a relatively small volume. This demand led to the development of highly efficient multilayer ceramic capacitors. In these devices, several layers of ceramic, from 25—50 ]lni in thickness, are separated by even thinner layers of electrode metal. Each layer must be dense, free of pin-holes and flaws, and ideally consist of several uniform grains of fired ceramic. Manufacturers are trying to reduce the layer thickness to 10—12 ]lni. Conventionally prepared ceramic powders cannot meet the rigorous demands of these appHcations, therefore an emphasis has been placed on production of advanced powders by hydrothermal synthesis and other methods. [Pg.500]
