Another comparatively recent development is poly(butylene terephthalate) heavily filled for electroplating applications. For a plastic it has unusually high density and so gives components much heavier than would be made with conventional unfilled polymers. In some instances this is regarded as desirable—the heavier mouldings are closer in weight and in feel to components cast or machined from metal. Since they are more familiar they are perceived to be of better quality—a concept apparently quite important for uses such as bathroom fittings and plumbers requisites.

The first plastic to be metallized on a commercial scale was ABS, which is used as a replacement for the much heavier zinc alloy die castings widely used in the motor industry. Many other polymers are now coated not only for decorative purposes such as bathroom fittings but also for the production of objects where the specific properties of metals such as electrical conductivity, high reflectivity and good barrier properties are combined with those of polymers such as toughness, flexibility, corrosion resistance and low cost. The techniques used to produce highly adherent metal deposits may be divided into two major groups, dry methods and wet methods.

It is not necessary for water to be in the same room, just available. The supply should be as clean and grit-free as possible, especially for film processing. If you are processing in a bathroom or kitchen, obtain a water filter that fits on the end of the tap. These filters are inexpensive and reduce the risk of spots from dust, dirt, rust, and undissolved chemicals contained in tap water. 

Dissimilar-metal corrosion can occur even if the two metals are not initially in direct contact. For example, in homes where copper tubing is used for plumbing, there is always a small amount of dissolved Cu2+ in the water. When this water encounters steel piping or a chrome-plated bathroom sink drain, the more-noble copper will plate out on the other metal, producing a new metals-in-contact corrosion cell. In the case of chrome bathroom sink fittings, this leads to the formation of Cr3+ salts which precipitate as greenish stains. 

On the other hand, many metals have characteristic bright, reflective surfaces that may be enhanced by polishing and surface treatments such as electroplating. The natural appearance of plastics is quite acceptable for many applications but sometimes there is need to make components with reflective surfaces similar to those in metals this may be no more than a question of appearance—the designer or manufacturer feeling that an item will look better—while in other circumstances a metallic finish may be functional. One instance of the second would be fittings for bathrooms, where a bright surface not only is attractive but also resistant to wear and easy to keep clean. 

We all have our ways of knowing when we re overweight. Our clothes don t fit the way they used to. We loosen our belts a notch. Stepping on the bathroom scales isn t something we really want to... 

Therefore, immersion heaters must be wired on a separate radial circuit when they are connected to water vessels which hold more than 15 litres. Figure 3.55 shows the wiring arrangements for an immersion heater. Every switch must be a double-pole (DP) switch and out of reach of anyone using a fixed bath or shower when the immersion heater is fitted to a vessel in a bathroom.
