BASIC SAFETY ASPECTS

Owing to safety aspects, apparatus is much more restricted than mechanical machines in plants. Construction and manufacturing of machines are widely unrestricted if basic principles, fixed, for example, in national regulation collections such as the German VDMA-Einheitsblatter are considered. 

HAZOP and What-If reviews are a basically a communication exercise. Information is presented, discussed, analyzed and recorded. Specifically the safety aspects are identified, to determine if adequate design measures have be taken to prevent major accidents. Communication and evaluation are the prime facets of the procedures.

This chapter discusses the safety aspects of ionizing radiation, not the public issues. It explores the basics of ionizing radiation and the hazards and controls for it. However, readers should perform an evaluation of this complex subject on their own. The basic process control requirements can be established only after an operating philosophy has been developed. The process variables to be controlled must be established. The basic data - the chemistry and the thermodynamics for the process - will define limits for a broad range of conditions at which the reaction is possible. The kinetics of the reaction and the properties of the catalyst, especially its thermal stability, will further narrow the range of possible reaction conditions and define a window of possible operating parameters. Process optimization, energy efficiency, and safety aspects will then determine at what conditions within the window the reactor should operate to give the optimum result.
