Mechanical machining

Gauges are used to monitor the various conditions and performance of mechanical machines such as pumps and internal combustion engines, as well as to monitor the surrounding atmospheric conditions, which could indirectly affect a particular machine. 

Owing to safety aspects, apparatus is much more restricted than mechanical machines in plants. Construction and manufacturing of machines are widely unrestricted if basic principles, fixed, for example, in national regulation collections such as the German VDMA-Einheitsblatter are considered. 

Finally, microchannels in glass have been mechanically machined using a wafer saw [131,792]. 

Mechanical injuries (cuts, scrapes, bruises, dislocations, broken bones, etc.) are as a rule caused by the violation of safety rules when servicing moving mechanisms, machines, elevators or faulty equipment they can also be caused by breakdown of equipment or piping. 

Metal objects with complex shapes can be formed by electrochemical machining (electroerosion), especially important when mechanical machining is not possible. The object is the anode, where dissolution occurs, and the tool is the cathode, having the form of a mould for the object. The cathode has small holes from which jets of electrolyte exit so that there is a layer of electrolyte between anode and cathode (Fig. 15.9). An extremely important example is the manufacture of components such as blades for turbines. 

The third objection of Stahl, the idea that machines do not suffer, has never been overcome, and even today is a major obstacle on the road towards artificial life. Descartes wrote that only human beings suffer because only they have a soul, while animals are merely mimicking the expressions of pain, but very few took seriously such an extravagance. It became increasingly clear therefore that an organism cannot be a mere mechanical machine, and eventually the concept of the chemical machine was universally accepted.
