The oxide exiting either the Barton or ball mill reactor is conveyed by an air stream to separating equipment, ie, settling tank, cyclone, and baghouse, after which it is stored in large hoppers or dmmmed for use in paste mixing. Purity of the lead feed stock is extremely critical because minute quantities of some impurities can either accelerate or slow the oxidation reaction markedly. Detailed discussions of the oxide-making process and product are contained in references 55—57. [Pg.576]

The plastic strain at fracture decreases markedly with time as the cement ages also the elastic modulus increases (Wilson, Paddon Crisp, 1979 Barton et al., 1975). There is an increase in dynamic modulus with time (Barton et al., 1975). [Pg.109]

Pang, Li, and Barton indicated, based on viscosity data, that PAEs had a stiff structure in solution [43]. A PAE shows a Mark-Houwink constant as high as a= 1.92 [43], revealing that it has a very stiff structure, similar to rodlike poly-(pyridine-2,5-diyl) [65,66]. Liquid crystalline behavior of PAEs with a meso-gen has been reported [45]. The chemical properties of PAEs have also been investigated with oligomeric model compounds [67-76]. [Pg.190]

Sack, Kevin. Gunman Slays 9 at Brokerages in Atlanta. The New York Times, July 30, 1999, p. A1. Reports on a killing rampage by failed Atlanta securities day-trader Mark O. Barton who killed nine people, wounded 12, and finally killed himself when cornered by police. [Pg.178]

A good fraction of modern chemistry, which includes medicinal chemistry, derives some of its inspiration from a consideration of nature as a model. It is impossible, in this brief article, to describe more than a fraction of the efforts. For additional work in the spirit of biomimetic chemistry, the following is a list of some authors not yet mentioned whose independent work should be consulted. Even here, this list is certainly not complete Jacqueline Barton, Steven Benkovic, Albrecht Berkessel, Thomas Bruice, Jik Chin, Jean Chmielewski, E. J. Corey, Donald Cram, Peter Dervan, Erancois Diederich, Mark Distefano, Jean Frechet, Samuel Gelhnan, John Groves, Andrew Hamilton, Donald Hilvert, Barbara Imperiali, Makoto Komiyama, Jean-Marie Lehn, Arthur Martell, Julius Rebek, Jean-Pierre Sauvage, Alanna Schepartz, Dieter Seebach, Donald Tomalia, and Steven Zimmerman. [Pg.1213]

The kinetics of this reaction have been studied by Barton, Howlett and a number of other workers Decomposition near 400 °C is characterised by marked induction periods. Howlett reported the induction period to be 12-14 min at 380 °C and to vary with temperature according to the expression 1.6x 10 exp (45,000/Hr) sec. Beyond the induction period, the decomposition was observed to obey a simple first-order rate law, with the rate coefficient expressible ask = 6.5 X 10 exp (47,000/Rr)sec Howlett proposed the following radical-chain scheme to account for the kinetics... [Pg.174]

Bismuth in human history dates back about two millennia when it was used as an additive to ancient metal products. However, its identity as a distinct metal element was only established by the middle of the eighteenth century. In marked contrast to the history of inorganic bismuth chemistry which started more than two centuries ago, the chemistry of organic bismuth compounds was born only two decades ago, when Professor D.H.R. Barton and coworkers began a systematic study of organobismuth compounds and laid the foundation for further development. [Pg.738]

Traces of bromine (Harden and Maccoll, 1955 Sergeev, 1956) or oxygen (Sergeev, 1956 Semenov et al., 1955 Agius and Maccoll, 1955) markedly increase the rate of pyrolysis of certain class II decompositions. On the other hand, little or no increase in rate is shown by certain class I decompositions in the presence of chlorine (Barton and... [Pg.98]
