In spite of the clear evidence for the importance of Coulomb interactions, and their role in determining the properties of conjugate molecules, the SSH model and its continuum version [18] are widely used, particularly for the modelling of polyacetylene in its excited states with the various parameters (bandwidth, electron-phonon coupling etc.) chosen empirically. This approach has been remarkably successful, and we follow it in the present work for the modelling of the effects of disorder on the chain. [Pg.559]

Much of the previous section dealt with two-level systems. Real molecules, however, are not two-level systems for many purposes there are only two electronic states that participate, but each of these electronic states has many states corresponding to different quantum levels for vibration and rotation. A coherent femtosecond pulse has a bandwidth which may span many vibrational levels when the pulse impinges on the molecule it excites a coherent superposition of all tliese vibrational states—a vibrational wavepacket. In this section we deal with excitation by one or two femtosecond optical pulses, as well as continuous wave excitation in section A 1.6.4 we will use the concepts developed here to understand nonlinear molecular electronic spectroscopy. [Pg.235]

The NEP may be written in terms of the detector element active area, the number of detector pixels elements cormected for additive output the electronic noise bandwidth B and the detector element detectivity, D. Typically = 1, but may be increased for improved sensitivity with an attendant loss in resolution. [Pg.291]

Banked Memory. Another characteristic of many vector supercomputers is banked memory. The main memory is usually divided into a small number of electronically separate banks. A given memory bank can absorb or supply operands at a much slower rate than the rate at which the central processing unit (CPU) can produce or use data. If the data can be spread across multiple memory banks, the effective memory bandwidth, or rate at which memory can absorb or supply data, is increased. For example, if a single memory bank can supply one operand every 16 clock cycles, then 16 memory banks would enable the entire memory subsystem to deflver one operand per clock cycle, assuming that the data come sequentially from different memory banks. [Pg.89]

Calculations for Ceo in the LDA approximation [62, 60] yield a narrow band (- 0.4 0.6 eV bandwidth) solid, with a HOMO-LUMO-derived direct band gap of - 1.5 eV at the X point of the fee Brillouin zone. The narrow energy bands and the molecular nature of the electronic structure of fullerenes are indicative of a highly correlated electron system. Since the HOMO and LUMO levels both have the same odd parity, electric dipole transitions between these levels are symmetry forbidden in the free Ceo moleeule. In the crystalline solid, transitions between the direct bandgap states at the T and X points in the cubic Brillouin zone arc also forbidden, but are allowed at the lower symmetry points in the Brillouin zone. The allowed electric dipole... [Pg.47]

Electronic instrumentation is available for the measurement of D.C. and A.C. voltage, current and power as well as impedance. Such instruments usually have higher sensitivities, operating frequencies and input impedance than is normally found in the electromechanical instrumentation described above. However, they may need to incorporate amplifiers and they invariably need power to operate the final display. Hence, an independent power source is needed. Both mains and battery units are available. The accuracy of measurement is very dependent on the amplifier, and bandwidth and adequate gain are important qualities. [Pg.239]

The disadvantage is that the optical bandwidth that can be detected is equal to the output electronic bandwidth. As communication components are growing faster, this disadvantage tends to disappear. [Pg.370]

The beating of a faint source with a high power coherent source is a well known process to detect its phase and amplitude. The same detection equipment allows the evaluation of the power of the source with theoretical limits similar to a noiseless photon counter. Such detection apparatus are limited by the bandwidth of the electronic component as this bandwidth is rapidly increasing, this may be a competitive solution for quantum limited detection in the far infra red. The phase of a thermal source is an useless information ... [Pg.372]
