Baits, pest control

The use of 1080 in the United States is now restricted to livestock collars on sheep and goats for protection against predation by coyotes. Other countries, most notably Australia and New Zealand, use 1080 extensively in a variety of baits to control many species of vertebrate pests. 

Pesticides for rodent pest control usually are formulated in baits. The chemicals may be highly toxic to humans, livestock, and other animals. Therefore, correct bait placement is important in order to control the pest... 

Few pesticides are available for non-rodent vertebrate pest control, and most require special local permits for use. The chemicals which are registered are usually bait applications. A few chemicals designed for aquatic pests or massive populations of pest birds are used as broadcast applications. 

Use the pest-control strategies in this section to lure pests into situations from which they can t escape. Pest baits and lures can be visual (using color or light to attract the pest), sexual (using pest-specific pheromones), or dietary (using preferred insect foods or kairomes, which are feeding stimulants).

An office responsible for pest control should be nominated by the manufacturer. This officer should ensure that pest control is carried out under specific instructions or agreements (including the mapping of any baits), should ensure that only nominated pest control agents are used, should take particular care that pest control chemicals do not contaminate materials, containers, products and should ensure that all treatments are logged. 

Outstanding activity against several urban insect pests, formulation flexibility (gel, liquid, granule, bait, etc.) and horizontal transfer in termite, ant, and cockroach populations, has quickly made fipronil one of the most successful urban pest control agents. 

Knowledge of the specific structures of insect pheromones has permitted their chemical synthesis, allowing their commercial use for the suppression of pest populations by mating disruption (5) (Figure 1). The practical use of pheromone-based pest control products typically takes one of two forms. Either the pheromones are used as discrete baits in traps so that males are drawn into the traps and removed... 

Superwarfarin rodenticides are used to kill urban and agricultural rodent pests. They are readily available to the general public and pest controllers and are easy to obtain and conceal, so they may pose a risk of being used as chemical warfare agents (EPA, 2003,2005 WHO, 2003,2008). These rodenticides are available as meal bait packs, pellets, mini-pellets, blocks, mini-blocks, wax blocks, liquid bait formulations, tracking powder, and concentrate formulations (POISINDEX, 2007 WHO, 2008 Wilton, 1991).
