Abstract This chapter embodies two sections. In the first section a survey of the state of the art of azo-dye conversion by means of bacteria is presented, with a focus on reactor design and operational issues. The relevance of thorough characterization of reaction kinetics and yields is discussed. The second section is focused on recent results regarding the conversion of an azo-dye by means of bacterial biofilm in an internal loop airlift reactor. Experimental results are analyzed in the light of a comprehensive reactor model. Key issues, research needs and priorities regarding bioprocess development for azo-dye conversion are discussed. [Pg.101]

An in vitro investigation into the bactericidal effects of a dental ultrasonic descaler on bacterial biofilms using Actinobacillus actinomycctcmcomitans and Porphyromonas gin-givalis has been reported [49]. Suspensions of the bacteria were subjected to the vibrations of a Cavitron PI insert for 2.5 and 5.0 min in an acoustically-simulated model substrate. A 60 % kill rate was achieved at a temperature of around 50 °C which constituted an alternative treatment for bacterial biofilms. This study suggested that a similar approach could be used in the clean-up of a range of biofQms considered to be the cause of a range of environmental hazards. [Pg.145]

FIGURE i Diagrammatic representation of the structure and function of bacterial biofilms. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is sorbed onto the biofilm (1), additional DOM is released from algae and organic particles (2). The organic matter is cleaved by extracellular enzymes (3). Interactions can occur between clones of syntrophic or competing bacteria (4). See Section II for details. [Pg.289]
