Automatic Train Protection

Control System (ETCS). ETCS is the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system, and GSMR is the radio system for voice and data communication. Together, they form The European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). The Radio Block Center (RBC) sends movement authority and track profiles to the train via GSM-R. The RBC is the link between the interlocking system, the train traffic control, and the train itself. The train reports its position to the RBC. Balises are read by the on-board antenna, processed by the ETCS onboard (trainbome) equipment and are used as position references for the train, i.e. they determine where the train is. [Pg.379]

Onboard equipments calculate a speed profile, taking into account the received movement authorities and the train characteristics (mass, length...). The speed limit as well as the current speed are displayed to the driver using a normalized interface (Figure 1), and are monitored by onboard equipments (Automatic Train Protection function with brake application in case of a speed excess). [Pg.1248]

Level 1 is designed to be compatible with national signaling systems, it provides an Automatic Train Protection functions using normahzed balises (Eurobalises) and transmission loops (Euroloops)... [Pg.1248]

As part of a pilot scheme. Automatic Train Protection (ATP) equipment was fitted to the Great Western train. However, experience has shown the ATP to suffer from reliability problems and the equipment was switched off because it was not operational. However, on the evidence gained so far, this was unlikely to have had a bearing on the accident... (HSC, 1999a). [Pg.276]

Limited possibilities of using automation or guarding to block certain actions in certain circumstances, or to take actions over. Examples are interlocks on machines which prevent access when the machine is under power or in motion, or automatic train protection systems which apply the brakes if a frain passes a red signal. The latter example is one which leaves the human in the loop to take the decision, but intervenes in clear emergency situations to cope with human failures. We can contrast this with automatic shutdown systems, which take the decision-making away from fhe person and fake fhem out of the loop. The person then has to intervene if fhe automatic system fails, an almost impossible task if fhis occurs very infrequently (e.g. once every few years) . [Pg.372]

The ATC system is used as an extension of the signal system into the drivers cab. In Sweden only speed signalling is used. The Swedish ATC system is something halfway between ATP (Automatic Train Protection) and ATO (Automatic Train Operations). [Pg.36]

Underpinning all the other activities in the SSI TOOLS project is the need to have a machine-readable description of the railway layout to be signalled. A prime requirement for any such description is the need to elaborate it later, for instance as additional functions such as Automatic Train Protection are required. A number of alternative representations were considered for this task, including ... [Pg.182]
