The cold to warm-temperate (or possibly subtropical) climate change during the Permian in the Australasian region and the combination of cold eastern marine surface currents and cool to warm western surface currents (Archbold, 1998) collectively explain many of the palaeobiogeographical features of the Australasian Permian distribution patterns of the Productida. Productid genera demonstrate an increase in diversity from south (Tasmania) to north (Bowen Basin, Queensland) in eastern Australia. Eastern Australian Permian productids, demonstrate a degree of endemism and, particularly those of Queensland, possess strong links with those of New Zealand (Bri s,... [Pg.363]

Zealand-New Caledonia-Solomon Islands from eastern Australia has been used to explain biotic similarities between New Zealand and south-east Australia, eastern Australia and New Caledonia and across the Coral Sea to the north, and distributions extending to Fiji in the east, i.e., those exhibiting fidelity with the Gondwanic province (Weston and Crisp, 1996). [Pg.405]

An examination of the flavonoids of Villarsia (Bohm et al., 1986) revealed a heterogeneous array of flavonol glycosides, based upon kaempferol, quercetin, and isorhamnetin, with each species exhibiting a unique assortment. Surprisingly, there were greater similarities between the pigment profile of V capensis and species from eastern Australia, V exaltata (Soland. ex Sims) G. Don from Tasmania and V. reniformis R. Br. from New South Wales, than with species native to... [Pg.187]

The geographical distribution of Australia s coal resources is shown in Fig. 1. New South Wales and Queensland possess large reserves of black coals in the Sydney and Bowen Basins, respectively, adjacent to the eastern seaboard. Significant deposits of bituminous coals are also known to occur in remote areas in South Australia at Lake Phillipson in the Arckaringa Basin and at currently inaccessible depth (200-300 m) in the Cooper Basin (3,4). [Pg.58]

Although Australia has a smaller desert area than either Africa or Asia, among the continents it has the highest proportion of arid and semi-arid zones. In fact, aside from some humid and semi-humid areas on the eastern, northern and south-western fringes of the continent, the core of the continent is arid or semi-arid. [Pg.19]

In eight contaminated soils with pH 7.05-8.20 from eastern and southern Australia, soluble Zn, Cu and Cd concentrations in soil pore water are 0.19-422, 36-4840, and 7.2-4260 pM, respectively (Nolan et al., 2003). [Pg.76]

Western civilisation is based on the cultivation of wheat, a practice that seems to have started in Mesopotamia, the area that is currently Iraq. Wheat is a member of the Grammacidae, i.e. it is a member of the grass family. The cultivation of wheat spread from the Middle East across Europe. Settlers took wheat seeds with them to the Americas and started to cultivate wheat there. Those settlers from Great Britain took wheat that had evolved to grow in British conditions. These wheat varieties would grow on the eastern seaboard but were not successful in the American Midwest. Subsequently, however, wheat from Eastern and Central Europe was found to thrive in the Midwest. The cultivation of wheat also spread to Canada and Australia. [Pg.1]

This was used to determine the content of methoxy groups in samples of 22 soils from Eastern Australia. A wide range in the methoxy group concentration was observed, which accompanied the wide range in organic concentrations measured (Table 10.3). Positive correlation (p<0.001) was found between the methoxy group and organic C contents of the soils. [Pg.290]
