Interpretation, particularly when it induces mindfulness and therefore promotes learning, satisfaction and understanding, is one of the dominant contemporary techniques for influencing sustainable visitor behaviour. It is sometimes seen as a special category of persuasive communication (Pearce, 1988) and indeed the mindfulness model is conceptually very similar to central and peripheral processing models used in the attitude-change literature. Persuasive communication is employed in a variety of tourist behaviour applications and can essentially be understood with the same parameters used in Figure 6.3 to explain interpretation effectiveness.

Where do the Ph.D. chemists intend to work, and how are their attitudes changing Every five years the National Research Council does a fairly thorough survey of the graduating Ph.D.s in chemistry and what they intend to do with their lives. According to National Research Council statistics, 18.5% of the 1970 graduating body was interested in going into academia, to teach future scientists, to do research, and to get involved in fundamental science. That 18.5% translates to 411 individuals. By 1985, 15 years later, not only had the total number of Ph.D. chemists dropped considerably, but the percentage that said they wanted to go into academia had dropped dramatically from 18.5% to 8%, a total of 147 individuals.

Simultaneous to the recycling study, Pharmacia Upjohn presented a questionnaire to the hospital personnel regarding their attitudes on environmental issues and plastic materials. The questionnaire was presented twice, prior to and after the case study, in order to investigate if attitudes changed during the study.

The lesson that cognitive dissonance teaches us is seen by some as being counter-intuitive - contrary to common sense. If you want to induce attitude change, get the person to undertake behaviour at variance with their attitude. But in doing so, make as little use of external inducements as possible. In this way theperson will not be able to justify their behaviour to themselves in terms of the inducements. Their only option is to change their attitudes.
