Recently, a new method of nomenclature of TPEs was produced jointly by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the Association of the Automotive Industries (VDA), Germany, and the producers of raw materials. Nevertheless, for this chapter the above-mentioned abbreviations for the TPEs have been utilized. Table 5.3 provides a list of significant suppliers of different generic classes of TPEs with respective trade names. 

The foundation for the JT standardization efforts was the tremendous commitment of international parties. Once the impetus by SASIG was provided [1], the four entities PSI, the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), the Automotive CIO s and the Global Automotive Advisory Group for PLM (GAAG) have become the key players in this process (Fig. 11.8). Hereby, PSI (www.prostep. org) has put enormous effort in the pursuit of these activities [11].

The end-use pattern of trichloroethylene in the United States was estimated as follows (CMR 1986) vapor degreasing of fabricated metal parts, 80% chemical intermediates, 5% miscellaneous uses, 5% and exports, 10%. The most important use of trichloroethylene, vapor degreasing of metal parts, is closely associated with the automotive and metals industries (CMR 1983). 

Today, a large and increasing proportion of the automotive OEM metallic basecoats in Europe and North America are already waterborne and refrnish basecoats are also available in waterborne versions. Other paint applications have followed and the significant growth of waterborne systems can easily be seen in the statistics of the paint associations. Also in printing inks, the use of waterborne inks is steadily growing. 

The paints and coating industry is divided into two distinct subsectors—architectural and industrial. The architectural coatings subsector depends heavily on the performance of the construction sector, whereas industrial coatings are closely associated to the automotive, major appliance, and industrial equipment sectors. 

A variety of standardized tests have been published for adhesive testing. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI), the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the Pressure Sensitive Tape Council (PSTC), and the International Organization... 

For every different vehicle concept and market situation, all potential benefits and challenges have to be investigated one by one in as much detail as required by the series-development process of the automotive industry. Only a system-level approach can lead to a final conclusion on the relevant points and the priorities associated to each one. Extensive tests of CMS installed in test vehicles (passenger cars and in commercial vehicle) has been carried out by the German Federal Highway Research Institute (BASt). The details and the outcomes of these tests are discussed in chapter Camera-Monitor Systems as a Replacement for Exterior Mirrors in Cars and Trucks . 

In 1996, an International Automotive Task Force was established, comprising representatives of the vehicle manufactures and trade associations from the Americas and Europe (see Figure 1.1).
